2 The Writing Process

3 Our Objectives What will we cover here? What is the writing process?
Why use the writing process? What are the steps to the writing process? The purpose of writing How to solve your writing issues

4 What is Writing? Writing is much more than just putting words on a piece of paper. Writing is a series of forward and backward steps as writers think, reflect, revise, detour, start over, and repeat earlier steps.

5 Why Use the Writing Process?
The biggest reason to use the writing process is that it makes your writing a lot more organized. It can also save a lot of time and confusion!

6 Steps in the Writing Process
Can you put the following steps in the correct order? Revise Publish Pre-write Edit Present Draft

7 TOPIC: Steps of the Writing Process
Step 1: Prewrite Decide why you are writing and who will read it Choose a topic Gather ideas (Brainstorm) Organize your ideas Use your notes from prewriting Get your ideas down on paper Don’t worry about mistakes Step 2: Draft

8 Add details and ideas Delete ideas that are off topic Substitute more interesting words Rearrange sentences or parts of sentences Step 3: Revise Check your spelling Fix punctuation mistakes Fix capitalization mistakes Fix other grammar mistakes Step 4: Edit NOTE: Revision is NOT editing!

9 Step 5: Publish Choose a format and stick with it Neatly write or print a final draft Add visuals if necessary Step 6: Present Share with your audience

10 Prewrite (Brainstorming)
Topic: There are many foods teenagers can make at home. Soups Sandwiches Frozen pizza 6. 7. Brainstorming allows you to collect all of your ideas and research about your topic in one place.

11 Prewrite (Planning) You can use any of the following to organize your ideas: Outline Graphic Organizer Map or Web Venn Diagram

12 Outline Example Topic: Foods that Teenagers Can Make at Home
I. Packaged Foods A. Mac and Cheese B. Pizza C. Ramen Noodles II. Fruit A. Apples B. Bananas C. Grapes III. Frozen Food A. Pizza B. Hot Pockets C. TV Dinners

13 Graphic Organizer Example

14 Brainstorm Time! Using one of the Prewriting strategies (Outline, Graphic Organizer, Web, or Venn Diagram) brainstorm ideas for the following writing prompt: We’ve all had teachers whether they were good or bad. Usually, the good teachers are the ones who are remembered by their students. What is the best quality a good teacher can have? Why is this the best quality? How can this quality help students? *Once you are done, put it aside and don’t look at it.*

15 Drafting The writer will write out the first version of the writing.
Although writers do not usually worry about correcting errors yet, the fewer errors that exist, the easier the editing will be.

16 Revision NOTE: Revision is NOT editing!
In this step of writing, the writer does NOT focus on grammatical errors but on the ideas presented. This is where the writer will rearrange sentences, delete sentences that are off topic, or add sentences that are missing. NOTE: Revision is NOT editing!

17 Editing This part of the writing process is where the writer focuses on grammatical issues and format issues. In this part of the writing process, the writer needs to make sure that everything is presentable.

18 Publishing and Presenting
Once the writer has completed the editing stage, then he or she is ready to publish their writing and present it to his or her audience.

19 The Purpose of Writing The purpose of writing is simply to get your ideas from your mind and communicate these ideas effectively to another person using written words. It is impossible to make your audience completely understand your ideas unless you write well. Following the writing process will help improve your writing!

20 How to Improve Your Writing
Some of you are thinking, “Well, I don’t write well, so what can I do to fix that?” Here are some tips to help improve your writing: - Write like it’s your job! - Write about things you enjoy! - Look at writing as a process: You get better with practice! - If you are having problems, figure out what they are so you can solve them!

21 Practice Problem/Solution
Not enough topic information Writing rambles Reader doesn’t understand the point Errors in writing

22 Practice Problem/Solution
Brainstorm (Problem: Not enough information) Outline/Plan (Problem: Writing rambles) Plan or Edit (Problem: Reader doesn’t understand) Edit (Problem: Errors in writing)

23 My Expectations Use the writing process with every writing assignment.
Use the writing process to solve your writing problems. Do your BEST not your LEAST!! DO NOT GIVE UP!!!!

24 Let’s Practice!!! Look at the brainstorming you did for the writing prompt. Don’t worry about an Introduction or a Conclusion right now. I want you to write three body paragraphs (8-10 sentences each) using the three parts of the writing prompt (Best quality, why is this the best quality, and how can this help students). IMPORTANT: I want you to keep your mistakes on your paper. Do not erase them or start over. Just continue working on the same paper. You will see why later on. Begin writing!!
