Purpose of My Class English I is meant to prepare the students for English II next year when they are all sophomores. It is designed to train them for the English II State Test they will take at the end of their Sophomore year. As such, everything we do in English I – like English II and the State Test - is based on the Mississippi Common Core Reading, Writing, and Language Standards.

Materials Notebook (preferably a 1” binder) Paper Writing utensils – pen or pencil All reading materials are provided by me as a classroom set

My Gradebook There are 3 types of grades: Major – large scale assignments such as Tests, Essays, & Projects (so these are few and far between) Minor – anything that is not Major including notes, quizzes, and daily grades Engagement – Minor grades for participation and contributing in class I use the 10 point grading scale that we have here at Pearl High School: 90-100: A 80-89: B 70-79: C 60-69: D 0-59: F My grading philosophy: MORE is MORE!

Homework (or lack thereof) The only time your child will have homework for me is if it is an assignment we worked on in class and they did not finish it

Extra Credit I am always happy to offer any student the chance for Extra Credit to boost their grades and/or replace any low grades or 0’s they may possibly have. There will be 1 extra credit assignment every 9 weeks Additionally, I am ALWAYS accepting packs of pencils throughout the school year as a smaller form of Extra Credit

Remind 101 All parents are welcome and encouraged to join as well! I use this app to send the students reminders about class. All parents are welcome and encouraged to join as well! Instructions are on my website (see your letter)
