How is High School Different from Middle School? Freshman Orientation 11/24/2019 How is High School Different from Middle School? Freshman Orientation High School has more opportunities/more classes/more responsibilities 9th Grade Counts! Grades 9-12 are considered in college decisions Self-Reliance: Teachers may not always remind you of work that is due or check homework Self-Advocate: It will be up to you to ASK FOR HELP. It is your responsibility, NOT your parents. Growth- Personal and Social; Try new things, join clubs, activities, and develop yourself outside of the classroom

Grade Point Average/Grading Freshman Orientation 11/24/2019 Grade Point Average/Grading G.P.A. is the average of all final grades earned in all courses throughout high school. Each marking period is worth 22% of the final grade The final exam is worth 12% of the final grade. THIS INCLUDES YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR! Freshman Orientation

College Planning: Overview of next four years Freshman Orientation 9th grade: Earn best grades possible Take the PSAT Get involved (clubs, sports, part- time job, community service, etc.) Get to know your counselor! 11th grade: Earn best grades possible Take the SAT/ACT in the spring Start doing research! Familiarize yourself with Naviance Meet with counselor to go over college application process Plan college visits; narrow down choices 10th grade: Earn best grades possible Take the PSAT Begin planning for post-high school (i.e. college, trade school, military, etc.) 12th grade: Take the SAT/ACT in the Fall Finalize college list Apply to colleges/financial aid/scholarships *A college fair is held at DBHS every October during the school day for every grade!

Transcript Frehsman Orientation A transcript is a record of all the courses you took throughout your high school career It is recommended that each student take “college prep courses” and challenge themselves to the best of their ability

Course Levels General Courses General courses meet the general expectations for a specific grade level or course and are aligned with the NJ Common Core Standards. Honors Courses Honors courses are enriched; they offer the same material as a regular class but in greater depth and with a faster pace. Honors courses emphasize critical and independent thinking to produce creative application of ideas. Advanced Placement Courses AP Classes are college-level courses and exams. Students will engage in intense discussions, solve problems collaboratively, and learn to write clearly and persuasively. Students are ENCOURAGED to take an AP Exam at the end of each course and must pay the cost of the exam. Freshman Orientation

PSAT The following grades will take the PSAT: Grade 9 Grade 10 To be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship, you will use your Grade 11 PSAT score PSAT’s are administered every year at David Brearley High School during the school day. Next year’s date: October 16, 2019 Freshman Orientation

State Testing Graduation Requirements

Sports Eligibility Freshman year: By January 31st – must pass 15 credits (3 classes) to be eligible for second semester End of the year – must pass 30 credits (6 classes) to be eligible for Sophomore year Freshmen Orientation

Union County Career & Technical Institute (UCCTI) – Shared Time Programs Freshmen Orientation Students attend UCCTI for a portion of the academic day and receive technical training in one of many different fields.   Most programs are offered to juniors and seniors Cosmetology and Automotive Technology are offered to sophomores – interested students would apply in the winter of freshman year Programs: Allied Health, Child Development, Commercial Art, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia Design, Electrical Technology, Interactive Media & Game Design, Welding, etc. Self-contained programs for Special Ed. Students also available.
