Four and Six figure grid reference – Step by step Map and Atlas Skills Geography - Year 7 Continents and Oceans Definition of terms Prime Meridian The line which runs through Greenwich in London is called the Greenwich Meridian or Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is 0° longitude. Equator a line drawn on the earth equidistant from the poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres Longitude Longitude lines show how far east or west a place is from the prime meridian Latitude Latitude lines show how far north and south you are from the equator Compass direction North, south, east and west. North East, North West, South East, South West. Contour lines Used to measure meters above sea level. The closer the lines, the steeper the gradient Scale Measure the distance on the map in cm. Convert into kilometres using the scale line. Your answer is now in km Field sketch a drawing which is drawn from an image or view of what you see. It helps us to record field observations and to summarise the key features of the land. Field sketch features Date, location, Title, Direction of view, Labels, Human and physical features. Physical features Natural landforms found in an area. (Forests, rivers, mountains) Human features Modifications people have made to the land. (buildings, bridges, tunnels, railroad tracks, dams, monuments, piers, cultivated land) Map Symbols Four and Six figure grid reference – Step by step Four figure 1 Locate the bottom left hand corner 2 Go along the corridor until you get to the correct horizontal line for your square 3 Go up the stairs until you find the correct vertical line for your square 4 Give the 4 figure grid reference Six figure 5 Go ‘along the corridor’ counting the tenths (little steps) 6 Go ‘up the stairs’ counting the tenths (little steps) 7 Add these two numbers to make it a 6 figure grid reference
