2 What is Geography? Geography is the study of everything on Earth.
How natural environments influence people How people affect the Earth How the World is changing

3 2 Branches of Geography 1.) Human Geography 2.) Physical Geography

4 Human Geography The study and distribution of the World’s people.
Examines how people make and trade things that they need to survive.

5 Physical Geography Focuses on Earth’s natural environments
Landforms Water features Plants & Animals Other physical features Studies the processes that shape the physical environment

6 What is a Region? Region- is an area with one or more common features that make it different from surrounding areas. Cities, States, Countries, & Continents Defined by physical and human features

7 Types of Regions Formal Region- has one or more common features that make it different from its surrounding areas (mountains, Rust Belt) Functional Region- made up of different places that are linked together and function as a unit (shopping malls, cities, city transit systems) Perceptual Region- region that reflects human feelings and attitude (home, the south)

8 Maps Globe- is a scale model of the Earth
Lines that circle the globe are in a pattern called a grid Latitude- drawn in an East & West direction, but are labeled in degrees North or South Longitude- drawn in a North & South direction, but are labeled in degrees East or West Cartography – the study of maps & map making

9 Making Maps Equator- an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North Pole & South Pole Divides the globe into Northern & Southern Hemispheres Prime Meridian- an imaginary line that is drawn from the North Pole to the South Pole Runs through Greenwich England Divides the globe into Eastern & Western Hemispheres

11 Understanding Maps Legend- is a guide that identifies symbols used on a map Scale- helps determine the real distance between points on a map Compass Rose- has arrows that point in all four cardinal directions ( North, East, South, West)
