Behavior Stimulus Response Instinct Learning All the actions an animal performs Stimulus A change in the organism’s surroundings that causes the organism to react Response An action or change in behavior that occurs in reaction to a stimulus Instinct An inborn behavior pattern that an animal performs correctly the first time Learning The process that leads to changes in behavior based on practice or experience

Imprinting Conditioning Trial & Error Learning Insight Learning A process in which newly hatched birds or newborn mammals learn to follow the first moving object they see Conditioning The process of learning to connect a stimulus with a good or bad outcome Trial & Error Learning A form of conditioning in which an animal learns to perform a behavior more and more successfully Insight Learning The process of learning how to solve a problem or do something new by applying what is already known Pheromone A chemical released by one animal that affects the behavior of another of the same species

A behavior cycle that occurs over a period of approximately one day A threatening behavior that one animal uses to gain control over another Aggression Territory An area that is occupied and defended by an animal or a group of animals Courtship Behavior The behavior that animals of the same species engage in to prepare for mating Society A group of closely related animals of the same species that divide up labor and work together Circadian Rhythm A behavior cycle that occurs over a period of approximately one day

Hibernation Migration Transmitter Receiver Satellite A state of greatly reduced body activity that occurs during winter Migration The regular periodic journey of an animal from one place to another and back again for feeding or reproduction Transmitter A device that sends out signals in the form of radio waves Receiver A device that receives radio waves and converts them into a sound or light signal Satellite An instrument that orbits a celestial body, such as the Earth
