Adjectives in French What is an adjective? An adjective is a word which describes a noun. A green door The big white dog Adjectives in French must be masculine or feminine to match the noun they describe un chien noir une tarentule noire un chien brun une table brune

Position of Adjectives in French Most adjectives (including colours) go after the noun they describe. e.g. un chien noir a black dog Some other adjectives (for example sizes) go before the noun they describe. e.g. un gros chien a big dog

Agreement of adjectives To make most adjectives feminine, simply add e e.g brun – brune bleu - bleue Exceptions: Adjectives which already end in “e” do not require an extra “e” e.g. rouge/ rose/ orange There are some exceptions to this rule e.g. blanc – blanche marron – marron (never changes) To make most adjectives plural, simply add s Exception: If a masculine adjective already ends in “s”, you do not need to add another “s”. e.g. un chien gris/ des chiens gris

Other adjectives petit (e) (s) small grand (e) (s) big/ tall gros (se) (s) big/ fat méchant (e) (s) nasty mignon (ne) (s) cute/ nice très very assez quite these adjectives of size go before the noun
