This is Buddy. He helps us look after our teeth and mouth.

Buddy is good at looking after his teeth and wants to help us look after ours.

Buddy is going to help us discover more about dental health using his special gadgets. Toothbrush Timer Torch Tablet

Buddy wants you to think about your diets and all of the different types of food that you eat. I need you to tell me all of the different food groups, can you help me?

Can you tell me the five different food groups? Protein Calcium Fat Vitamins and Minerals Carbohydrate

Can you tell me the five different food groups? Protein Calcium Fat Vitamins and Minerals Carbohydrate

Buddy needs your help on what he should eat for his dinner. This is my ‘eat well’ plate. Have I got all of the five food groups on it?

My ‘eat well’ plate.

Are all of the food groups I need in my diet on there? Eating a balanced diet can help keep my teeth healthy too.

Do you know what happens inside your mouth every time you eat? Let’s find out the facts on my tablet.

Every time you eat foods or drinks containing sugars the bacteria in plaque produces acids, which can damage the tooth enamel. Dentists call this an ‘attack’.

How does our mouth recover from an ‘attack’? After every balanced meal your mouth reproduces saliva. This helps cancel out the acids produced. Your mouth can only do this four times a day – which is why it’s important to have three meals a day and no more than one snack.

Snack ‘attack’? If between your balanced meals, you find you do need to snack try not to have more than one and make sure it isn’t too high in sugar. Snacks like raw vegetables, nuts, cheese or breadsticks are good choices.

From what we have learnt so far, who can tell me how many balanced meals and how many snacks we should have a day?

We should have three balanced meals a day We should have no more than two snacks a day

We should have three balanced meals a day. We should have no more than two snacks a day.

Using the other information that we got from my tablet, can you tell me which of these foods we could eat as a snack?

Which would be the best choice of snack for our teeth?

Using your own ‘eat well’ plate draw something healthy for your dinner Using your own ‘eat well’ plate draw something healthy for your dinner. It must contain a food from each group and be good for your teeth too.
