Plaque produces acid when you eat or drink sugary foods and can cause a hole in your tooth The germs that build up in your mouth every day are called plaque. Key stage 1 – lesson 1

The fluoride content is always written on the side of the tube, you could perhaps bring a tube of toothpaste in and point it out to the children.
