Industrialization required new markets to sell goods More raw materials were needed Empires were seen as an example of national greatness Europeans believed in Social Darwinism Europeans were more advanced then everyone else Had duty to westernize or civilize other people

Types of Imperialism Colony – A country governed directly by a foreign power Protectorate – A country governing itself but still under foreign control Sphere of Influence – An area in a country where trade is controlled by an outside power Economic Imperialism – A country controlled by a private business
