Take out a sheet of paper Title it “First Week Warm ups” Keep all your warm ups on this sheet of paper. It will be collected for a grade at the end of the week. Daily obj: I can identify and analyze contrasts and contradictions among characters in a text to make inferences about characters in a story. Yesterday, we reviewed literary elements, some may have been reading strategies that you have been taught in previous years. This year, we are learning NEW reading strategies called “Notice and Note Signposts.” When you notice a particular signpost, you will STOP reading and ask yourself a question. The answer to the question will help you make inferences and identify the theme. Overall, this will make you a BETTER READER! Yay!

Daily obj: I can identify and analyze contrasts and contradictions among characters in a text to make inferences about characters in a story. CONTRASTS AND CONTRADICTIONS When you’re reading and a character says or does something that’s opposite (contradicts) what he/she has been saying or doing all along. You should STOP and ask yourself: Why is the character doing that? The answer will help you make a prediction or draw an inference about the plot or conflict.

Turn to page 68 in the textbook. Daily obj: I can identify and analyze contrasts and contradictions among characters in a text to make inferences about characters in a story. Turn to page 68 in the textbook. I am going to model for you how you might discover a contrast and contradiction in a character.

With your table partner, continue reading “Thank you, M’am” Daily obj: I can identify and analyze contrasts and contradictions among characters in a text to make inferences about characters in a story. With your table partner, continue reading “Thank you, M’am” Use your sticky notes to identify contrasts and contradictions you see with Mrs. Jones and Roger. On your sticky note answer the questions: 1. What is the character doing that contradicts or is unexpected? 2. Why is the character doing that?

What contrasts and contradictions did we find? Daily obj: I can identify and analyze contrasts and contradictions among characters in a text to make inferences about characters in a story. Class Discussion: What contrasts and contradictions did we find? Why would the character act that way? What did you learn about the character based on this action? How might this help us lead to the theme of the story?

Daily obj: I can identify and analyze contrasts and contradictions among characters in a text to make inferences about characters in a story. Exit Ticket: Turn in your best sticky note from today’s reading. Make sure your name is on it.
