7 Engaging the Reader: Connecting Vocabulary to Atticus’s Character (4 minutes)
Take out your structured notes homework & meet with your Discussion Appointment partner from p. 111 Compare the definitions you each came up with for the vocabulary words from p. 117. Discuss which vocabulary words from the homework they would use to describe Atticus’s character and why. Cold Call

8 Engaging the Reader: Review Learning Target (1 minute)
Long-Term Target I can analyze the development of a theme or central idea throughout the text (including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot). (RL.8.2) Supporting Targets I can analyze how the themes of the Golden Rule and taking a stand are developed in To Kill a Mockingbird.

9 Analyzing Perspective: Scout and the Reader in Chapter 15 (15 minutes)
For homework you read only part of Chapter 16. Today you are going to study an earlier part of the chapter. Turn to page 210 in your novel of To Kill a Mockingbird. We will begin with: “I thought Mr. Cunningham was a friend of ours.” Read along silently in your heads as I read aloud to the top of page 211, ending with: “I don’t want either of you bearing a grudge about this thing no matter what happens.” Turn and Talk: What is the Gist of this excerpt? (30 sec.) Share answers from turn and talk

10 Analyzing Perspective: Scout and the Reader in Chapter 15 (15 minutes)
Turn to p. 118: Analyzing Themes Note- catcher and listen for the directions. You are going to complete only Part A of the Note- catcher now. You will have about 8 minutes to complete the questions in Part A Find a different temporary discussion partner to share the answers to the questions in Part A. You will take turns sharing answers and add or revise your answers during this time. Return back to your original Discussion Partner and debrief any additions or revisions you may have made based on sharing with a different partner. Part A. The Golden Rule What did Atticus mean when he said, “You children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute. That was enough” (210)? What did Walter Cunningham understand about Atticus when he “stood in his shoes”? How does this quote relate to what Atticus said earlier in the novel: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (39)? How do these two quotes relate to the Golden Rule?

11 Analyzing Theme: Taking a Stand (19 minutes)
Display the Little Rock Nine photograph. Remind students that they first saw this photograph in Unit 1, Lesson 1, when they looked at other photographs in which people took a stand. Ask: “What made this photograph different from the other ones we looked at?” Cold call several students to answer. Ideally they will remember that this was an example of taking a stand in a hurtful way. “Can you draw any connections between this photograph and the angry mob scene you envisioned when you read that part of the novel?” Invite students to turn and talk to their partner; cold call several pairs to answer.

12 Analyzing Theme: Taking a Stand (19 minutes)
Part B. Taking a Stand Atticus Mr. Cunningham What was each character taking a stand about? How did each character take a stand? How did Mr. Cunningham’s stand change after he “stood” in Atticus’s shoes? Let’s look at Part B of the Analyzing Themes Note-catcher on p. 119 complete this second part with your partner. Be sure to use the strongest details from the text to answer the questions. Find another different temporary discussion partner to share your responses to Part B of the Note- catcher. You will take turns sharing answers and add or revise your answers during this time.

13 Debrief (5 Minutes) “Both Atticus and Mr. Cunningham took a stand. When is taking a stand a positive action?” When is taking a stand a negative action?” Turn to p. 120: Exit ticket Write “turned in to teacher” on this page Respond independently on the copy I gave you. Cold call students to answer. Be sure students understand that when taking a stand is driven by the Golden Rule, it’s positive. Be sure students understand that it is negative when it is driven by self-interest. Collect the exit tickets to formatively assess their understanding of the analyzing themes in the novel.

14 Preview Homework (1 minute)
Complete a first read of Chapter 18 and the structured notes on p
