1 Good Morning Everyone!! Our Warm Up today is finishing the exam we began on Monday. You will have exactly 30 mins in class today before we need to move on. If you are done come see me!

2 Mary Poppins vs Scary Mary
Unit 2 : Self & Society Setting, tone, mood, and Author’s Purpose: What do they have in common? We are going to watch 2 movie trailers, look at your handout – what are we looking for? Mary Poppins vs Scary Mary

3 Ok so what did we just watch?
Mary Poppins Scary Mary Mood: Tone: Setting: Imagery: How did the change in these elements effect you as a viewer? Why would the author/ director want to do that? This will projected straight on the board and students will add the info from their WS.

4 Utopia vs Dystopia Here is where I would introduce the def. of Utopia and Dystopia – I may or may not write these on the board. Again we are looking at colors are symbols and analyzing mood to figure out the differences. Look at your notes on the videos; which was which? What predictions can you make about the things we will be reading?

5 Turn your WS over! Let’s think about author’s purpose – if you were going to write a story about a society that tried so hard to become perfect that they became evil; what would your message be? What modern day events do you think stories like this relate to?

6 Homework Read and Annotate “The Pedestrian” Use your Guided Reading questions as the basis for your annotation.

7 Grammar We are going to look back at what we started from last week ~ before open our notebooks, see how much of the worksheet you can fill out from memory!

8 Good Morning Everyone!! Grammar Warm Up
Turn to pg 340 in your Blue Books, ex 7 – we will go over this in 10 mins! Be ready!

9 Review of Sentence Combi
When we correct sentences, we can use quick formulas to ‘solve’ the punctuation problem. What are our formulas?

10 The Pedestrian Quiz: Identify 4 different examples of figurative language and explain why they are important.

11 The Pedestrian Video Let’s look at our guided reading. What did you notice?

12 The Pedestrian Think, Pair, Share With the person sitting next to you discuss the following: What Literary Device had the biggest impact on you as the reader? What was that impact? What ‘real world’ issues could this story connect to? Why do you think Bradbury wrote this piece? What did he want the reader to think about?

13 On a loose sheet of paper!
Answer the following questions: What is the Central Idea of the Pedestrian? What could the author be attempting to relate to in real life? What is one possible theme? How did the author use setting and tone to make you understand what they were trying to say?

14 Homework In your Literature Books on pg 410 read Peace of the Wild Things Yes! This means you have to bring you book to class tomorrow!!

15 Work sheet on the back table! Be ready to work when the bell rings!
Good Morning Everyone!! Grammar Warm Up Work sheet on the back table! Be ready to work when the bell rings!

16 Compound and Complex Sentence Rules
Try to fill out your sheet as we move along remember to make word banks in your notebook as need. Try to do as much of this sheet without looking at your notes as possible BUT when you get stuck look there for the answer first!!

17 Allegory Allegory is a figurative mode of representation conveying meaning other than the literal. Allegory communicates its message by means of symbolic figures, actions or symbolic representation. What does all that mean?

18 Allegory An allegory tells us one story while really telling us another. Think of The Pedestrian – we read about a man walking down the road but was that REALLY what Bradbury meant? Try and think of a few other stories that have another story hidden inside!

19 Peace of the Wild Things
Open you book to pg 410. What is this poem about? How does it relate to anything else we have read? Think about what an allegory is- what could possibly be hidden here.

20 Writing Section Think about how the themes or messages of this poem and The Pedestrian might be similar. If you had to make connections between the two what would they be? 1 paragraph!

21 Harrison Bergeron We are going to begin this together! Remember to ANNOTATE it is a grade for the Socratic seminar!!!

22 Take out the Work Sheet from Yesterday: you will have 15 mins.
Good Morning Everyone!! Grammar Quiz Take out the Work Sheet from Yesterday: you will have 15 mins. New Grades are posted!

23 Socratic Seminar Tomorrow
Changing it up!! Instead of your normal session we are going to try something new! Same Prep, Same Questions, Different Format!!! R & R Seminar!!!

24 So what does that mean? R & R – Researching and Representative. You will discuss in pairs (assigned by me) with one person representing (or talking) and the other researching and finding supporting material. You must switch back and forth at least once, but can tag team out as many times as you want so that both people can talk. IF YOU ARE NOT TALKING YOU MUST BE ACTIVELY RESEARCHING MATERIAL!!!!

25 When you come in: The desks will look like this: Find your names and start planning with your group mate how you are going to approach the opening question, which will be on the board.

26 All Clear?

27 Right on to THE TEXT!!! First off, what did you think? Ok now let’s look deeper…..

28 Movie Time!!! We are going to watch a short trailer for a movie made about this story, while watching please make a comparison chart in your notebook. Look for: Characterization Tone Mood Physical representation of Imagery Finally is this story an allegory? Does it mean something deeper?

29 So What? Why does this matter? What does the figurative language and literary devices tell us about the story and why did Vonnegut write this? 2 paragraphs on a separate sheet of paper.

30 Homework Socratic Seminar Sheet: All the Pre- Seminar Work: Vocab, 2 questions, thoughts about the book, titled rubric with goals outlined.

31 Happy Friday!! Today is Socratic Seminar day. Look over your work and remember to think globally ~ how can all these stories relate to our world?
