Most Dangerous Game Final Exam Review By: Lindsey Savill

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME BY: RICHARD CONNELL CHARACTERS: Whitney- A character introduced with Rainsford while they were heading out of Ship Trap Island. Whitney did not fall off of the boat. Rainsford- The main character of this short story. He is on the boat with Whitney and falls off of the boat, onto Ship Trap Island. He eventually meets Ivan and General Zaroff, and Zaroff wants to hunt him. He is famous for writing a book about hunting. He is the first one to win Zaroff’s hunting game and kills both him and Ivan. General Zaroff/The General- he lived with Ivan and offers to hunt anyone who gets on his island, if they accept. Ivan- He is deaf and dumb, but very strong and owns weapons. He holds captive of awaiting sailors who get trapped on the Island, or if people refuse to hunt then he tortures them. The hounds- These are General Zaroff’s hounds used to help him hunt and sends them out at 7 pm every night. One of the hounds gets killed by a trap made by Rainsford

Setting and Plot Setting: Ship Trap Island, on the Caribbean. This is a place that others have not yet escape from (except for Rainsford). It is a place with jungles, hills, swamps, a beach, and quicksand. These aspects of the Island are important in the story since each of these helps Rainsford while he is in Zaroff’s hunt. Plot: Rainsford gets trapped on Ship Trap Island, eventually finding Zaroff and Ivan’s house. He is offered housing and clothes, and the General especially treats him well, since he likes the book that Rainsford is famous for about hunting. While he and Zaroff were eating dinner together, Rainsford was introduced to the way that the General hunts and then had to join the General in his game of hunting. The General hunts by giving who he is hunting 3 hours by themselves to prepare and then for the next three days is hunted by the General and his dogs. Rainsford is put in this situation almost immediately.

Conflicts Man VS Nature: Rainsford VS Weather and Water When Rainsford was on the boat, the weather and water he was sailing on caused him to lose his balance and fall out of the water Man VS Man: Rainsford VS General Zaroff Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff, who has always won the hunts, is being hunted by him Man VS Animals: Rainsford VS The Hounds Rainsford, during the hunt, has to fear General Zaroff’s dogs, since they are very deadly and are let out every night at 7

Resolutions Rainsford VS Weather and Water: Rainsford takes off his clothes after he falls into the water to make it easier for him to swim and eventually got ashore Rainsford VS General Zaroff: Rainsford uses efficient techniques to fend off characters which help Zaroff hunt, and also hides very well for 3 days, willing the hunting game. He also after the game surprises the General by sneaking into his room and killing him Rainsford VS The Hounds: Rainsford kills one of the hounds with his trap near the quicksand he made (Trap #1) and also used very good survival tactics to make it so that the dogs cannot find him

Exposition and Initiating Incident Rainsford and Whitney are sailing on their boat, heading out of Ship Trap Island. They are talking about how the Island they are sailing out of is rumored that there are Cannibals on the Island and that it is feared by Sailors AND Captains. Initiating Incident: Rainsford falls out of the boat into the water, then loses the boat. He has to swim through the water to the Island. Falling off of the boat initiates the incident of him being trapped on the Island.

Rising Action Rainsford eventually gets on the Island and walks to a large house that belongs to two Russians named Ivan and General Zaroff, who are of high class. When he arrives there, he is first met with Ivan pointing a gun at him, but then Zaroff made sure Ivan knows that Rainsford is safe. He is invited in for dinner and gets new clothes, and Zaroff treats him very well especially knowing that Rainsford is a famous author for writing his book about hunting, which is what they both enjoy doing. Rainsford is introduced to Zaroff’s hunting game and is offered it. He accepts and he gets 3 hours to get ready, then for the next 3 days is hunted by Zaroff and his hounds. For now, he is preparing for the 3 hours that Zaroff isn’t there. While preparing, he creates difficult tracks to follow and hides up in a tree.

Complication and Climax Though Rainsford made very difficult tracks for any skilled hunter to track, Zaroff had tracked Rainsford down with ease. Climax: Zaroff finds Rainsford in the tree, but while looking up the branches he stops at the limb right before the one Rainsford is in.

Falling Action and Resolution After realizing just how good of a hunter Zaroff is, Rainsford steps up his game and does not give up. For the next two days, he makes three traps; the first one hurting Zaroff’s arm, the second one killing Zaroff’s best hound, and the third killing Ivan. During the next two days, he is hidden from Zaroff. Resolution: Rainsford wins the General’s hunting game. After winning the bed, he sleeps in Zaroff’s bed without him knowing. Once the General finds Rainsford in his bed, he is very surprised and gets into a fight, which results in Rainsford killing him, then feeding him to the remaining living hounds.
