Life and Science Chapter 1

Searching for the Truth Why do leaves change color? Jack Frost paints them It gets colder Lettuce doesn’t turn shades of red in the frig. The leaves get old Leaves change color at same time. Shorter days cause the chlorophyll to break down and fade allowing other colors to show How do we know what to believe?

Questions to Ask Is this true? How do they know? Should I believe it?

Christians Christians have three ways to test correctness. Historical Fact Scientific Fact Biblical Truth

Historical Fact A true statement about the existence of something or about a past event. What did you have for dinner last night? Being young creates limits on personal historical facts.

Test for Historical Fact: Physical evidence – tangible, visible means of something A building A skeleton Recorded evidence – evidence that has been written or recorded by man Can be altered

Scientific Facts Science is man’s observations of the physical world. Observations are what we can tell about our surroundings by using our senses. Must be repeatable and measurable

Universal Statement – a statement that excludes or includes everything There is no life on other planets Value judgments – scientific observations cannot be used to make value judgments Observations can tell you the color of a painting but it cannot tell you if it is beautiful Good or bad, right or wrong, valuable or worthless

Biblical Truth Biblical Truth: 1Timothy 3:16 Genesis 2:7 Romans 3:23

The Scientific Method Problem – identifies or observes Hypothesis – an educated guess at the solution to the problem Experiment - observe and record data Analyze – classify and organize the data Conclusion – choose an answer Verify – repeat the experiment and obtain identical results

Scientific Method Information Data – pieces of information Experiment – controlling all the conditions of two or more identical groups then altering only one factor within one group Altered factor – the experimental variable Group altered – the experimental group Group not altered – control group

Science and the Bible The Word of God and true science NEVER contradict each other!!! God created the world…man observes the world and makes statements. When the statement is true it lines up with the Bible…when the statement is false it may contradict the Bible. Evolution vs. Creation Electricity

The Proper Place of Science Predict – Use science to predict outcomes Bias – a strong opinion or belief that could affect a person’s judgment Ohio State is the best college football team Everyone should send their kids to Calvary!
