Science is a “body of knowledge,” or a collection of facts. It is a process of discovery where we use experiments and investigations to find & test new facts. What IS Science?

Vocabulary is a very important part of science. We will use these new words all the time. Vocabulary

11 analyze To examine methodically by separating into parts and studying how they compare and contrast

12 conclusion A statement that tells what an investigation showed, based on observations and data.

13 control In an experiment, it is the setup to which you will compare all the others to.

14 data Measurements or observations collected and recorded in an investigation or experiment.

15 evidence Information collected during a scientific investigation.

16 experiment A scientific test or procedure that is carried out under controlled conditions to answer a scientific question.

17 hypothesis A prediction based on prior knowledge

18 infer To use observations and prior knowledge to determine what is happening.

19 investigation A procedure carried out to carefully observe, study, or test something to learn about it.

20 observation Information collected by using the senses.

21 opinion A belief or judgment. It doesn’t have to be proved or backed up with evidence. I Believe…

22 prediction A statement, based on information, about a future event.

23 procedure A way of doing something in a particular order

24 trials Multiple sets of measurements or observations in a scientific investigation.

25 valid A term used to describe whether the results are TRUE or can be PROVEN.

26 variable Any condition in an experiment that can be changed.
