Background Going into the 2013-14 school year, we had discussed potential technology options for BMS- last year we invested a ton of time researching ways to enhance our current 1-1 laptop program which had been inexistence for over 10 years. We set out to find forward-thinking and innovative technology that would allow for greater use and creation utilizing a 1-1 device. The verdict… iPads for all BMS students for the 14- 15 school year.

Instructional and Educational Outcomes “Students have to be able to navigate through, independently, a vast amount of information, learn and mimic new genres, and communicate with others near and far. It’s with this in mind that the CCSS focuses on key skills and concepts that will serve students for a lifetime in our ever-changing world.” ~ Erin Powers

What tech option will best support the following skills for our students over the next four years? Enhance Research & Digital Media Skills Real World Problem Solving Critical Thinking Creativity Collaboration Communication

What will using the iPad look like while at BMS? Research and word processing at your fingertips Ability to create projects and assignments via iMovie, Pages, Keynote, etc. Taking notes using apps like: Notes, Evernote or Pages during class Ability to quickly and efficiently communicate with your friends, teachers and administrators Listening to music and playing games with friends during lunch AND THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

All students have Google Apps accounts via the internet All students have Google Apps accounts via the internet. They will be using these accounts to access: E-mail File storage (30 GB) Document and presentation tools Collaboration tools Web site tools *See Letter sent to BMS families regarding Apple ID’s from Principal Angel.

All accounts are part of the chelsea.k12.mi.us domain. Students will be using Google Drive as their “home” file storage via the iPads. All accounts are part of the chelsea.k12.mi.us domain. They are filtered and monitored. Students will be receiving their account login IDs and passwords along with other information for accessing their accounts.

Haiku Learning Systems is a lesson-centric learning management system created to bring the advantages of the web to K-12 classes. Haiku is much like Moodle or Blackboard in that they are all Learning Management Systems. These allow teachers to set up courses, set up activities and assignments, monitor student progress, allow collaboration, and use as a general learning hub of resources for the classroom. These tools help to extend the classroom beyond the normal school day.

Haiku LMS is built around the idea that content should be the focus. Features include: assignments and assessments gradebook calendar discussion topics student e-Portfolios

iPad Expectations (24 hours/day, 7 days a week) In class… Out of school… BMS iPads

In class… Your use depends on the teacher’s directions Your use should be for class activities only * no texting friends * no use of camera/recordings * no gaming CHS iPads

Outside of school… All school rules still apply: your iPad is property of the Chelsea School District. Content you post on social media matters: if it impacts the school day – even if it occurs outside of school - we will follow up. You are responsible for proper care for the iPad: charging nightly, appropriate handling. Rule to apply: every activity on the iPad should be “school appropriate” no matter the time of day or your location. BMS iPads

By accepting an iPad, you agree: To abide by all CSD expectations of appropriate use. To proper care and handling of the device. That improper use may result in discipline and/or loss of your iPad. Privileges are given …and can be taken away. BMS iPads
