Parts of Speech Review

What is a noun? A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. “Last year, our neighbors bought a puppy.” “I read an excellent book last night.”

More nouns “At the lunch table, my friends talked about the football game.” “On the news, President Obama gave a speech about the economy.”

What is a verb? Verbs express actions, events, or states of being. Action verbs Helping verbs “Dracula bites his victims on the neck.”

More verbs “The expensive sports car raced around the corner and across the finish line.” “Yesterday, my best friend was distraught because she did not have a date for the dance.”

What is a pronoun? Pronouns replace nouns in a sentence. Less repetition “You are surely the strangest child I have ever met.” “Hanna was nervous because she had to give a speech.”

What is an adjective? Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns. They usually precede the noun. “The heart-shaped balloon floated over the treetops.”

More adjectives “I ate a juicy, red apple for lunch today.” “The chaotic classroom sent the teacher into a terrible frenzy.”

What is an adverb? Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. How? When? Where? How much? “-ly” “The waitress quickly brought our meals.”

More adverbs “Johnny quietly waited for his parents after school in the library.” “Yesterday, we carefully dissected an owl pellet in science class.”

What is a preposition? A preposition links nouns and pronouns to other parts of the sentence. Relationship of an object to the rest of the sentence “The duffel bag is beneath the table.”

What is a conjunction? Conjunctions link words and phrases. “I ate the whole pizza and some chicken wings.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkO87mkgcNo

What is a interjection? Interjections convey emotions. HEY! “Ouch! That book fell on me!”
