School Safety Discussion - ALICE Parent Presentation

Does anyone know when the last time someone died in a school fire?

12/1/1958 Why so long ago?

ALICE: A – Alert All are authorized to announce No codes are used L – Lockdown Including barricade I – Inform Use technology to provide updates on information C – Counter Interrupt the intruder’s plan As a last resort only E – Evacuate Leave the building if safe to do so

What ALICE is and is not… Common sense approach to a situation Tools for teachers to use Options based on the situation Empowering all to make choices A set of life-skills for all situations What ALICE is not: A sequential set of actions A prescribed emergency response

Evacuate: Get out Jen

Barricade: Lock and Block Jen

COUNTER The “intruder” is typically not a highly skilled shooter The intruder is usually unable to deviate from their plan, so any distraction can significantly impact their ability This is the last and most unlikely option, when there is nothing else you can do What you can do: make noise! move! Distract. Distract, Distract!!

ALICE DRILLS: 11/7 From 10:15pm-11:15pm - We will hold ALICE drills. Students will be grouped by homeroom. We will practice one true barricade before being given any scenarios We will then have four scenarios where we will either evacuate or barricade. -When Barricading - Please use three designated desks during drills -When Evacuating - Please don’t go further than 30 yards away from the School ------- Do not sprint in the hallway ------- Keep everyone safe.

We are the first responders Past incidents last only 5-6 minutes We must feel empowered to make decisions based on the information we have Traditional Methods are proven to not be effective.

Lessons learned from past tragedies: April 16, 2007 – Virginia Tech Killed: 30 Wounded: 17 Various responses in each classroom Standard lockdown Lockdown with barricade Evacuation

Room 210 No Class Room 206: 14 present Killed: 10 Wounded: 2 Traditional Lockdown Room 204: 19 present Killed: 2 Wounded: 3 Jumped & Barricaded Room 200 Hallway: 1 Killed Offices Room 211: 19 present Killed: 12 Wounded: 6 Room 207: 13 present Killed: 5 Barricaded (after 1st time) Room 205: 12 present Killed: 0 Wounded: 0 Barricaded

Any Questions?
