Conducted and Presented by Dee Harmsen, Paul Krikau, Dan Parizo, and Matthew Rose Cabinet Meeting, February 2, 2016

2 Findings, in brief Communication infrastructure is in place, but some improvements are necessary. Communication protocols needed clarification and training for intended recipients. Sensitivity in BOLO communications can be improved. Emergency response teams are in place and are trained; however, some areas of the institution are not aware of team existence and functions. Training for an active killer scenario is available but not widely attended.

6 Additional information
ALiCE; Response teams

7 What is ALiCE? Information, authorization, and proactive training is key to surviving the Active Shooter. Alert: all authorized to announce, no codes are used Lockdown: must include barricade training Inform: use technology to provide play by play information Counter: interrupt the skill set needed to shoot accurately Evacuate: get away from danger if possible

8 Why ALiCE? Police response is slower than actual act of violence
ALiCE teaches options and how each individual should come to their personal decision Lowers liability to University Statistics have proven survivability increases substantially when given options over old “duck and cover” and “lockdown” models used as sole means to respond. VA Tech 28 vs 2 28 were killed when using passive response to active killer 2 died in rooms where proactive response was used

9 ALICE HOW? BIT, TRT, and ERC teams were trained in ALiCE in January
It was offered to faculty and staff at the in-Services It is being offered throughout the week to students Future: Monthly Faculty specific times and dates TBD Fall orientation
