Valley Robotics Academy Board Report 02/19/19

Executive Summary Goals: Provide an innovative STEM/CTE opportunity for students who might not otherwise be able to access pathways at comprehensive sites and who want robotics, drones, and automation integrated throughout the curriculum and instruction. Respond to regional economic and employment needs in the area of robotics, automation, and manufacturing. Build upon and expand the successes we have had at Middle College. Provide alternatives in an increasingly competitive school landscape. Progress: A steering committee has been formed. Proposed enrollment plan and education plan (drafts) included in presentation. Publicity and communication strategy is being established. MOU with Delta College in draft phase. Staffing timeline has been identified. Committee is addressing logistics including: transportation, budget draft, and facility. Next steps with a timeline included in presentation.

Committee Formation Based on board input, we established an initial steering committee. Once an MOU is executed, we will expand the committee.

Timeline December 14, 2018- LUSD and Delta College met for vision and concept January 15, 2019- board report for input January 23, 2019- committee formed and met January 29, 2019- LUSD meeting with Delta College (Salvador Vargas) February 11, 2019- publicity and communication strategy meeting February 12, 2019- committee meeting (progress updates, discussed MOU, and draft budget) February 19, 2019- board report Proposed Next Up: February- draft MOU and draft budget March- MOU and funding approval March- principal position posted April 15, 2019- Transfer posting for teaching positions

Proposed Enrollment Plan   Proposed Enrollment Plan Enrollment can scale up or down based on student interest, success of the program, available resources, board direction, and/or staff feedback. There is potential to increase 9th grade enrollment at any time. 7th Grade 8th Grade 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade 12th Grade Total 19-20 30 32 92 20-21 122 21-22 60 28 180 22-23 238

Proposed Education plan School Day Middle School students will attend Valley Robotics from 8:00am-2:30pm. High School students will attend from 8:00am-1:00pm every day and from 2:00pm-4:30pm on Delta College days (currently projected to be 2 days a week for 9th grade). Delta College Cohort Delta College and LUSD have discussed a Valley Robotics "cohort". A "cohort" means that Delta will open Delta College Robotics and Automation courses and only fill them with our students. Also, they will consider offering Delta College classes at Valley Robotics in the afternoon. This will allow students to fulfill Delta requirements on the high school site as well as the college site.

Proposed Education plan (continued) Possible Program Outcomes Further discussion is needed to align curriculum from High School to Delta to Bakersfield. High School (all students will complete the following) College and Career (all students will have 3 options) CTE Pathway Industry Certificate High School Diploma A.S. in Automation and Mechatronics Shadow/Internship/Externship B.S. transfer in Industrial Automation (Bakersfield)

staffing Upon execution of an MOU, we can post positions for staff (admin, counseling, classified). We have confirmed that teaching positions created for Valley Robotics can be posted during the 3rd transfer posting (April 15th) and are covered under our current agreements.

Other considerations Transportation A 1:00 pm bus will transport students (one-way) from Valley Robotics to Delta College on the days high school students attend Delta College. There will be no home-to-school transportation. Alignment and Collaboration with Comprehensive Sites We are reviewing pathways for middle school sites to offer semester-long, CTE sequence courses.   We will convene a meeting of current LUSD robotics instructors to solicit their input on the education plan and ideas for collaboration.

Next steps Get committee and board feedback on proposed plans Execute an MOU with Delta College Review draft budget Expand committee and meet with staff experts Communicate and promote with internal and external stakeholders Post and fill positions
