“Ideologies in Conflict” Chapter 8 “Ideologies in Conflict”

Housekeeping How are your vocab books doing, let me know when they are getting full. Your Ideology assignments (the Yellow Book) are due.

Words Ideological Conflict Expansionism (Page 187) Cold War Containment

End of WW1 When WW1 ended, the Allies began to discuss what to do with Germany. The Western Allies (US and Britain) wanted Capitalism and the USSR wanted Communism. The only thing they agreed on was the disillusion of Germany.

The Yalta Conference The second WW was about to end. The Russians and the Americans had become to worlds super powers. The Countries were in Ideological Conflict on how to run the world. After WW2 the big three got together to rewrite the map.

Continued They hoped for Peace. At the end of the conference in Yalta, Ukraine. Germany would be divided into four zones (British, American, French, and Russian) People will have free votes to choose governments and leaders.

Potsdam Conference 1945 Germany officially surrenders. Both sides began to discuss the makeup of Europe . The West and the East were at odds. The Soviets had developed friendly communist government in all liberated countries. The US and Britain were strictly Anti-Communist. This was the start of the COLD WAR!

Cold War (1945-1991) Ideological conflict between Communism and Capitalism. No actually military conflict, rather it used Espionage (Spies), Propaganda, Social Conflict, and Economic sanctions.

Expansionism At the end of Yalta, the hope for agreement was ending. Both sides began developing Spheres of Influence. West of Germany became Americanized and East of Germany became Communist.

What Russia Wanted Stalin saw the USSR’s expansion as way of dominating the world economy. He wanted Germany broken (Remember that Germany had Invaded Russia Twice) Wanted a Soviet Buffer Zone.

Containment Harry Truman. US policy of stopping Communism by establishing allies around the world. Many Economic and Military Alliances. Both sides wanted to avoid a “Hot War”

Truman Doctrine President Harry S. Truman would support any country Financially that wanted to overthrow a communist government. Started with Greece and Turkey.

The Marshall Plan Expansion of Truman Doctrine. Help rebuild European Economies so that these countries would be less inclined to be taken by Communism.

The Formation of NATO and Warsaw Countries During this time felt that they had to join one side or the other. The Capitalist countries joined NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) The Communist joined the Warsaw Pact. (Signed in Warsaw)

Countries Singed Because Military Alliance and Security. Economic Security. Some joined out of necessity. Some joined due to Ideological Agreement.

Notice: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd world countries. That’s it we are done!
