Before The Israelites Choose a King Around 1000 B.C., the strongest people living in Canaan were the Philistines The Israelites began to worship their gods The 12 tribes constantly quarreled To unite against the powerful Philistines, they needed a king

Before The Rule of King Saul Despite his warnings, Samuel the prophet did as the people wanted and chose a king (Saul) He defeated many of the Israelite enemies Saul displeased God by disobeying Him and God instructed Samuel to choose a new king
