2 Rise of a King Samuel was last judge of Israelites. People wanted a king to rule over them. Samuel anointed Saul as king of Israel.

3 Saul Led many victories against Philistines
According to Hebrew Bible Saul lost fame because disobeyed God’s commands. Saul sought out for a new king

4 David Saul anoints David as king (Saul is still king)
Famous for defeating Goliath, a Philistine giant David fought many battles for Saul and eventually became more famous than Saul “Saul has slain thousands, and David his tens of thousands” Saul attempts to kill David and goes out to hunt him down. Both Saul and his son Jonathan die in a battle against the Philistines. David returns as the king of Jerusalem

5 David Defeated Philistines Famous for writing Psalms
Psalms: Sacred song or poem Dies and his son Solomon rules

6 Solomon Ruled in a period of peace Built the First Temple
Famous for writing proverbs Proverbs: wise sayings (My child,never forget the things I have taught you.     Store my commands in your heart. 2 If you do this, you will live many years,     and your life will be satisfying. 3 Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!     Tie them around your neck as a reminder.     Write them deep within your heart.)

7 Solomon Israelites disliked his taxes & projects
922 B.C. after Solomon’s death, the kingdom split into two. Northern kingdom known as Israel Southern kingdom known as Judah

8 Two Kingdoms Israel made up of ten tribes Capital: Samaria Judah made up of two Capital: Jerusalem

9 Fall of Israel Assyrians defeat Israel in 722 B.C.
Assyrians mixed w/ remaining Israelites. Their descendants became known as Samaritans

10 Fall of Judah 597 B.C.: Chaldeans led by Nebuchadnezzar forced some people of Judah to live in Babylon King of Judah rebelled and in 586 BC Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and brought all people with him. This is known as the Babylonian Exile Remember me?

11 Prophets’ Message Prophets spoke words of hope to Jewish people
Prophets spoke about their disobedience to God and they had to change their ways and reconnect with God
