1 DO NOW: THINK OF A PERSON YOU CONSIDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL. WHAT QUALITIES DOES THIS PERSON HAVE? Chapter 11 ~ Lesson 4

2 Concept: What kind of king was David?

3 Chapter 11 ~ Lesson 4 David was from the tribe of Judah. When King Saul died David became king. It was about 1000 BC. David was a mighty warrior, who set out to attack the Philistines, Israel’s main enemy. David forced them out of Israel and even took over Philistine territory. David then set out to take over areas that were controlled by the Canaanites. The Israelites take over of Canaan that started with Joshua hundreds of years earlier was finally complete. Since King David conquered Jerusalem, it became known as the City of David.

4 Chapter 11 ~ Lesson 4 David made Jerusalem the capital of Israel, and brought back the ark of the covenant. He set up a government and did not raise taxes. This won King David great support from his people. With God’s help Israel became a strong nation under David. Although David was the greatest king of Israel, he also had weaknesses. David was in love with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, a great warrior. David arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle so he could marry Bathsheba.
