What role did the three first kings of Israel play in their history? What happened to the Israelites after the reign of Solomon and why?

prophet – a person thought to be instructed by God empire – a nation that rules several other nations tribute – money or slaves given to a stronger ruler out of fear or force proverb – wise saying / life advice

Where is Israel?

Main Idea: The Israelites chose a king to unite them against their enemies. Around 1000 BC, the Philistines were the strongest group in Canaan. The Israelites asked Samuel to choose a king form them. Samuel was a prophet, a person who was thought to be instructed by God.

Samuel, at the request of the Israelites, anoints Saul Saul becomes the first king of Israel. According to the Bible, God was not happy with Saul because he disobeyed the Ten Commandments. Unknown to Saul, God then chose David to rule.

THE LEGEND OF DAVID AND GOLIATH The Philistine and Israelite armies were lined up to fight and the Philistines were much stronger. Goliath, the strongest Philistine warrior marched in front of the Israelites, challenging any of them to fight him one-on-one. None would, until David walked out. With one stone from his sling, David killed Goliath and the Philistine army ran in fear. Goes on to serve in Saul’s court and become the next king

David united the Tribes of Canaan Creates an empire Makes Jerusalem the capital Known as the Israelite’s greatest king

David’s son, became king after he died. Known for his proverbs, or wise sayings. “Turn your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding” “Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men” Built a huge temple in Jerusalem that became the center of the Jewish world. Was supposedly were the original Ten Commandments were kept in a room called the Holy of the Holies. TEMPLE CLIPCLIP

When Solomon died, northerners rebelled and fighting started. Many angry over the high price of the temple. Tribes separated and the nation splits into two. “United we stand, divided we fall”?

Assyrians & Chaldeans = building empires in southwest Asia (Mesopotamia/Fertile Crescent) – want control of trade routes through Israelite’s kingdom. Prophets = brought hope Told the people there were too many people not obeying God’s law, therefore breaking the covenant.

722 B.C. Assyrians conquered Israel and scattered 10 tribes across empire = known as the “lost tribes of Israel” Judaism – religious practices from Judah (Israelites faith) Conquered by Assyrians 722BC and assimilated by other peoples, thus being lost to history; belief persists in some places that the tribes will one day be found; claims have been made that American Indians, Japanese, and other groups are descendants of the tribes.

Egyptians conquered Judah in 620 B.C. (however this rule was short lived) Chaldeans then conquered Egypt and became new rulers of Judah Nebuchadnezzar – Chaldean king who captured Jerusalem. He punished Jews severely –appointed a new Jewish king & then He CRUSHED JERUSALEM – destroyed the temple, bound the king in chains, and exiled (forced to leave their homeland) 10,000 Jews to Babylon (Chaldean capital) = this exile was known as the Babylonian Captivity
