Sec 2 –Israelite Kingdom

2. The Israelites were lead by a Judge but they wanted a King to lead them.
The Judge Samuel choose Saul to lead the Israelites.
Saul won many battles against the Philistines
Saul became very popular with the people but disobeyed God and was replaced with David.

3. King David Was a Sheppard
Fought a giant Philistine warrior by the name of Goliath.
David used a slingshot and a stone.
Hit Goliath right in the forehead.
He dropped down dead.

4. King David Saul placed David in charge of his army.
David won battle after battle.
The women of Israel sang a song praising David for these victories: “Saul as slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands”.
Saul became jealous and tried to kill David.
David fled Israel until Saul’s death.

5. King David David united the 12 tribes of Israel.
His army defeated the Philistines.
He created
Jerusalem as
the capital.
He is credited to
have written the
sacred songs
found in Psalms.

6. King Solomon David’s son Known for: Peace to the Israelites
Built the first Temple of God
His wisdom
Caused a split of the 12 tribes
People did not like the taxes paid for the Temple construction.
Also didn’t like that families were being split up to get Cedar wood in Phoenicia.

7. After Solomon died the tribes split into 2 kingdoms, Israel(10 tribes) and Judah
The capital of Israel was Samaria.
The capital of Judah was Jerusalem.
Kept the same religion and customs.

8. 722 B.C. The Assyrians over ran the 10 tribes of Israel.
Assyrians were very brutal people and often tortured the people they conquered.
They took some Israelites and forced them to live in other areas.
They also forced people to settle in Israel.
A new people developed known as Samaritans.

9. In 597 B.C. the kingdom of Judah was conquered by the Chaldeans and king Nebuchadnezzar.
The king took many Jews and forced them to settle in Babylon.
Later the people still in Jerusalem rebelled, King Nebuchadnezzar completely destroyed Jerusalem including the Temple.
Known as the Babylonian Exile.

10. While in Babylon the Jews began to meet in Synagogues or Jewish homes to worship.
They worshipped on the Sabbath (sundown Friday to Saturday night)
The Persians allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their Temple.
They were not permitted to have a King so priests and scribes guided the people.

11. Jewish food restrictions
Laws stated what a Jew can eat.
They can eat Beef and Lamb but not Pork.
The can’t eat anything that is “unclean”.
Today food that is prepared according to Jewish ways is known as Kosher.
Animals need to be killed in a certain way.
Meat has to be inspected, salted, and soaked in water.
Can’t eat meat and dairy together.
No shellfish such as crab of shrimp.

12. Food and religion Seder is a special meal eaten during Passover.
Lamb, hardboiled eggs, vinegar, salt water, herbs, and matzoh is served.
The youngest child asks questions about the food being served. The adults and older children recite the answer together.
