Lockdown procedures

What does lockdown mean? Discuss what you think the term ‘lockdown’ means? Have you heard the term ‘lockdown’ before? If so where? When? Why? Are you aware of anywhere having had a lockdown? Lockdown is the ability to quickly restrict access to an area of the school. through physical measures in response to a threat, either external or internal. The aim of lockdown is to prevent people moving into certain areas. Lockdown is intended to keep everyone in school safe during an incident that is out of our control

Why have a lockdown policy? Threats from the local area e.g. hunting in the woods etc. Threats from outside of the school. Incidents in school. Police operations outside of school. Threats from the local areas – please discuss our proximity to the woods, local hunting and farming etc Threats from outside of school – please discuss incidents such as intruders entering the school, the recent emails the other schools have been sent etc. Incidents in school – please discuss if there is an incident in a certain area of the school or with pupils, areas may need to be closed Police operations – please discuss if the police are dealing with a major incident outside of the school in the local area

We will have a practice lockdown drill in the Summer term. What will happen… A tannoy will announce that we are either on an internal or external lock down. Staff will instruct you what to do. We will have a practice lockdown drill in the Summer term. Remember PAL PAL stands for "Pause, Adult, Listen." It describes the three things you need to do as soon as a lockdown begins: "Pause." Take a deep breath. Breathing helps you think. During a lockdown, instead of panicking, take a moment to slow down and make decisions. "Adult." Find an adult you trust. This can be your teacher or someone who works at your school. If you are in your classroom, listen for instructions from your teacher. If you are outside, find the nearest trusted adult and do what they say. "Listen." Listen to the trusted adult while they tell you what to do next. You will only know what to do if you listen. Lockdowns are a little different from fire drills because you might not go to the same place every time.
