Raging Rivers Mr Exley Mrs Millican Topic based learning As part of our topic this term, our learning will include developing our use of maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate different countries and the rivers within. We will then aim to progress this skill by beginning to describe the physical and human characteristics of the given locations, supporting our own views about locations or differing rivers using reasoning. Having identified the characteristics, we will then develop our understanding of land-use and how this may have changed over time, for example a comparison of the use of the River Tyne throughout history. Mr Exley Mrs Millican Creativity and Love of Learning Through imaginative topic based learning, pupils can make real life links and find a purpose to their learning. We aim to encourage pupils to learn from history and understand that we can learn lessons from the past. We link this historical context to a number of artistic projects to make the learning more real. Global Citizens Alongside global citizenship comes global responsibility. We will learn about issues in the world today. Children are encouraged to regard everyone as equal in the eyes of God. The whole child – Spiritual, Moral and Personal We will consider the importance of being a caring and sensitive person, mindful of all our friends needs and wants. Pupils will continue to take part in weekly PSHE teaching. This is aimed at encouraging all the pupils to make informed choices about their behaviour and consider the effect of their actions upon others. Communication, Language & Literacy Through our work in English, we will be listening to and discussing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts; increasing familiarity with a range of books and retelling some of these orally; researching topics and producing information texts; reading and creating our own narratives; and using these examples to help plan writing. Children will continue to learn to read a wide range of words and increase their fluency in reading. As well as reading children will develop their comprehension skills demonstrating an understanding of what they have read. They will be introduced to new grammatical terminology including subordinating conjunctions, complex and compound sentences and using the correct form of an and a. They will learn new spelling rules and learn how to use apostrophes and speech marks correctly in their writing. Religious Education During this term, as always, RE will shape many of the things we do each day, with Christ being at the centre of our school. Using the diocesan resource, Come and See, we will study: The family of God in Scripture and Baptism. We will learn about the Jewish faith and through feast days we will learn about other faiths. Mathematics This term pupils learning will include the following: Number, Place Value and sequencing, including developing an understanding of greater and smaller amounts, ordering and sequencing amounts and representing/interpreting problems in a range of different ways. All 4 operations + - x ÷ using both written and mental methodologies including weekly challenges Solving multiple step word problems Mental calculations including speed tests calculations without calculators. In year 3 we will be aiming to consolidate our knowledge in counting forwards and backwards in multiples of 2, 3, 5, 10 and 100. In year 4, we will be aiming to consolidate our knowledge of counting forwards in multiples of 6, 7 and 9. Science We will be learning about light. Through this topic we will learn about why light is important, how we are able to see using light, how the light from the sun can be dangerous and how shadows are formed. Music Children will have weekly music lessons in which they will learn to read musical notation, play tuned and untuned percussion instruments and perform together. German Weekly German lessons will be taught by Mrs Bircham on Monday mornings. Using ICT & I-pads We will use ICT to present information for a variety of different audiences. We will continue to use Scratch as a programming tool on the I-pad. D & T Skills and Art Pupils will have a skills based Art lesson each week. In these lessons we will aim to produce work related to our topic, while taking inspiration from the greats (classic and modern). Physical Education During the Autumn term we will begin to develop our skills within hockey. While developing our understanding of the game, we will look to strike a ball with control, maintain possession of a ball using a hockey stick and follow the rules of the game, playing fairly. PSHCE PSHCE will be taught weekly as individual lessons and through a variety of subjects. We will cover some areas in RE and through the statements of the week. Through computing lessons we will be learning how to stay safe online with regular e-safety lessons. We are a rights respecting school and have our charter displayed in class. Supporting your child at home The support you give your child at home is invaluable to their progress and appreciated by all staff. Please encourage your child to: · Do their homework promptly, to a high standard and return it on time. · Find a good novel that they enjoy and read it. · Sign reading records regularly—at least 3 times a week if possible. · Practise their 1, 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 6 times tables to develop quick recall of facts. · Do some independent research into this term’s topics by using books, newspaper or magazine articles and on the internet. · Practise their spellings for the weekly spelling quiz on Mondays. We are continuing to encourage independence and responsibility this year, so please encourage your child to organise themselves and know what they need for each school day Weekly homework Homework will be given out on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday. Spellings and times tables will be given out for the half term. Times tables and spellings should be practised regularly throughout the week. Every child should read at least 3 times a week.
