1 Areas of Learning As part of our topic this term, we will be focusing on our History aspect and looking at The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain. We will attempt to study many different aspects of The Roman Empire including : Why the Romans invaded Britain The Roman Empire by AD 42 and the power of its army. Successful invasion by Claudius and conquest, including Hadrian’s Wall. What the Romans did for us We will make links to all our areas of learning including written work linked to The Romans, learning about Roman numerals, making mosaics and designing and making Roman helmets. We hope to visit Vindolanda at Hadrian’s wall to further exploring Roman life on the edge of the empire 2000 years ago. Global citizens Global issues and encouraging children to see the world through other eyes is important. In an increasingly interconnected world, we need to learn be able to engage in communication with people from a wide range of different cultures and traditions. This term we will take part in in international day celebrations and explore what its like in other countries. Creativity and a love of learning Through a creative curriculum each exciting term is aimed to inspire the children to LEARN, and most importantly... enjoy learning. The children will learn the skills, knowledge and processes that help them to become independent learners who are also able to collaborate effectively in problem solving situations. Skills for life During the year pupils will have opportunties to explore, imagine and create, while being equipped with many life skills. The aim is to inspire children and develop their imagination and practical skills. The whole Child Every child in our class deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Learning is active, engaging, and social. Students need to be engaged and motivated in their learning before they can apply higher order, creative thinking skills. 2 Communication, Language & Literacy Through our work in English, we will be listening to and discussing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts; Increasing familiarity with a range of books and retelling some of these orally; Discussing and performing playscripts; Reading and performing poems; and using these examples to help them plan their writing. Children will continue to learn to a wide range of words and increase their fluency in reading and focus on understanding what they have read. They will be introduced to new grammatical terminology including conjunctions, adverbs and clauses. They will learn new spelling rules and learn how to use apostrophes and speech marks correctly in their writing. Religious Education During this term, as always, RE will shape many of the things we do each day, with Christ being the centre of our school. Our topics include: Homes -where the children will explore God’s vision for every family. Reconciliation - which is part of the Sacramental Preparation Programme Visitors; which looks at the importance of waiting for the coming of Jesus. Mathematics Over the next term, maths will include learning about:  Number, place value and rounding  Mental addition and subtraction  Multiplication and division  Geometry: shapes  Measuring Linking to our topic work we will also be looking at Roman Numerals Geographical Understanding As geographers, we will be learning mapping skills; naming and locating counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics. We will be using atlases to identify settlements in the UK through their historic place names. Design and technology As designers we will be designing and making our own roman helmets. We will also be doing some cooking linked to our science study of states of matter. Science Skills As scientists we will be looking at different states of matter, exploring a variety of everyday materials and developing simple descriptions. We will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases; Make observations that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens. Art Linked to our study of Roman Britain, we will be investigating patterns and creating our own mosaics. We will also be developing our sketching technique. Physical Education As part of our PE curriculum year 3 and 4 take part in weekly swimming lessons at Blaydon swimming pool where they will be taught to swim competently, confidently using range of strokes. Computing E- safety Programming using scratch and creating an animation Multimedia and word processing Languages Weekly French lessons with Mrs Innerdale will cover introductory French, greetings, numbers and colours. Swimming and PE The class will have swimming lessons every Tuesday afternoon at Blaydon swimming pool so the children need to bring in their swimming kit each week. PE lessons will be every Thursday afternoon. Children need to have suitable footwear (trainers or plimsolls) as we will be doing some PE outdoors. The children may wear school tracksuits once the weather gets cooler. PE kits can stay in school on the children’s pegs and be taken home every half term to be washed. Homework Weekly English and Maths homework will be given on a Friday. Homework is to be returned by the following Thursday so that there is sufficient time for the books to be marked and returned. Spellings will be given on Monday to learn for a Friday and times tables homework will be given on a bi-weekly basis so the children will have two weeks to practice. The children will be tested on their spellings/times tables on a Friday. Reading The children are encouraged to read at least three times per week for about 10 minutes each time, (not necessarily the whole book – a few pages or a chapter) and their reading journal needs to be dated and signed three times by a parent/carer before reading journals are checked each Friday. The children are given opportunities to change reading books every day if needed but other books read at home can also be entered into their reading journal as books read alongside their school reading book. In the front of the children’s reading journals, there is a table of reading activities for the children to complete during the term. The children can choose one activity a week and complete activity in their journal. Reading diaries will be checked every Friday.
