My Career As A Fashion Designer Hello Everyone! My name is Maegan Womack and I’m going to be talking to you about my career as a fashion designer. Presented by: Maegan Womack

Why I Want to Be A Fashion Designer I want to be a fashion designer because I love experimenting with colors and textures. I enjoy doing fashion design and fashion sketching in my free time. Things I will most enjoy about this job: Getting to meet different artists Having the opportunity to showcase my work I want to be a fashion designer because I love to see how different colors look together and how I can enhance those colors with patterns, textures, and styles. I chose this career because I enjoy doing fashion design and fashion sketching in my free time. I have actually brought some of my drawings to show you today. I have some original designs, as well some Disney character designs. In most of these I have used the original design to create a depiction in my own style. I think I will enjoy this job because I will be doing something I love and something I’m passionate about every day. How many of you think fashion designers just sit around and draw pictures every day? Well that’s only half the story.

Job Description As a fashion designer, I will be required to be up to date on fashion trends in order to create original works of clothing, including individual articles and full outfits. Create a sketch, either by hand or digitally Experiment with fabrics to create a sample garment Create a final product to be manufactured Types of fashion designers: Clothing designers Footwear designers Accessory designers Costume designers As a fashion designer, I will not only take my idea and put it on paper, I will also be required to make that design into a sample garment. This includes shopping for fabrics and embellishments, and then using those to sew and put together the desired article of clothing. I will then take the garment and work with a design team to perfect it and prepare the idea for mass production and retail sales. While creating the original idea, I not only have to keep in mind my own desires for the product, I also have to stay up to date on current fashion trends to ensure that the article will sell in a retail setting. There are multiple types of fashion designers: The first are fashion designers. This is my field of expertise and the one I will talk about the most in this presentation. They create articles of clothing including shirts, pants, dresses, etc. The second are footwear designers. They create shoes that are both fashionable and practical. The third are accessory designers. They design accessories such as handbags, scarves, eyewear and luggage The fourth and final type of fashion designers are costume designers. These artists create costumes for motion pictures, television, and theater productions.

Important Qualities Here are a few things you must have in order to be a fashion designer: Artistic Ability Communication Skills Computer Skills Creativity Decision-making Skills As a fashion designer, I will be required to create garments that people will remember for years to come. In order to that there are some qualities I must have. All fashion designers must have artistic ability. A lot of fashion designers do their sketches on paper(as seen along the bottom of the screen). Some designers have converted to digital sketching. As you can see on the right, this is a picture of a digital fashion design program called Fashion Design 1. Fashion designers must also have good communication and computer skills. They send emails to other designers and to manufacturers, as well as talk to these people in person. It is important to be able to explain your ideas thoroughly and in an organized and respectful manner. Fashion designers must also be creative. They have to be able to see something not as it is, but as it could be. Finally, fashion designers must be good decision makers. They have to decide what colors and styles fit in the genre they are designing for. They also must be able to make good economic decisions to stay within a budget.

Education or training To be a fashion designer, I will be required to have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising. Can be acquired through the National Association of Schools of Art and Design All of these schools are outside the U.S. I prefer to get my degree from either Stanford University in Stanford, California or from the School of Visual Arts(SVA) in New York City Develop a portfolio Serve as an intern or an assistant designer To be a fashion designer, I will be required to have at least a bachelors degree. Degrees in fashion design or fashion merchandising can be acquired through the Nation Association of Schools of Art and Design, but most of these schools are outside the U.S. I will most likely get my degree from either Stanford University in California or from the School of Visual Arts in New York. After I get my degree, I will begin developing a portfolio. This is a collection of original designs and artwork that I will use and add to during my career as a fashion designer. I will also serve as an intern or assistant designer under a professional designer in order to grow my experience and expertise.

salary The salary of a fashion designer greatly changes as more you become more experienced. In 2015, the annual starting pay was pretty low, around $33,000 dollars, but in the upper percentile, the average was about $125,000. Most designers work full time, often working overtime to meet fashion show and client deadlines.

Job outlook (projections are from 2014 to 2024) The projected job growth for this career is slower than average at only 3%. The projected employment change for this career is approximately 700 jobs. The job outlook from 2014 to 2024 is about 3%. This change is slower than average. They projected employment change in numbers is about 700 jobs. Education and experience greatly improve the chances of finding a job in this field. The competition is strong because there are a great number of people seeking jobs in this career, but the retail industry is selling different types of clothing which increases the need for good fashion designers who can design for everyday wear and mass production.

What I will wear to my job There is not really a set wardrobe for this career. Most designers work at home or in a small office, so the daily attire is more business casual as you can see in the two pictures on the left. However, I would strongly suggest wearing more of a professional look for meetings with manufacturers, agents, and clients. Something more like the outfit on the right.
