Essential Questions for the week… What are the characteristics of a good interview? How does a writer’s use of language create a distinct voice? How do we use textual evidence of voice to support inferences about a speaker?

Monday 2/11/2019 Warm Up What are the characteristics of a strong interview? What elements should the interview include? REMEMBER: ALL WARM-UPS SHOULD BE AT LEAST ONE PARAGRAPH IN LENGTH

Tuesday 2/12/2019 Touchstones: We will head to the computer lab for Unit 2 touchstones. Persuasive Techniques: We will learn the difference between ethos, pathos, and logos. Persuasive Techniques Practice: With a partner, complete the charts on the Ethos, Pathos, and Logos packet. DO NOT ANSWER ANY OF THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Rhetorical Appeals in Speech: Turn to page 70 and follow along with the speech from former president Barack Obama as we watch. HW: USA TEST PREP DUE FRIDAY BY 8:00AM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Wednesday 2/13/2019 Warm-up If you were trying to convince a classmate or friend to go to college, what type of evidence would you provide to support your claim? Which persuasive/rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) would you use? REMEMBER: ALL WARM-UPS SHOULD BE AT LEAST ONE PARAGRAPH IN LENGTH

Wednesday 2/13/2019 HW: 1. Interview Transcript due Friday! Interview Brainstorm: Decide who you might want to interview (has to be someone who is already out of high school). Using the interview transcript chart, brainstorm questions you might want to ask your interview. An Early Start on College: We will read the article, “An Early Start on College”, on page 81 as a class. Once you have finished reading, answer questions 3-6 with a partner. CEI Writing: We will continue to discuss the proper use of claims and evidence in writing using the information from “An Early Start on College” as our evidence. Independent Reading (if time): Continue to read your IR book and complete the blue independent reading log HW: 1. Interview Transcript due Friday! 2. USA TEST PREP DUE FRIDAY BY 8:00AM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Thursday 2/14/2019 TED Talk Thursday: Complete the TED organizer as we watch the Art of Persuasion TED Talk Education Still Pays: Read the “Education Still Pays” article on page 66. Once you have finished reading, answer questions 1 & 2 independently. Finish CEI Intro: Complete the guided notes sheet while Dr. George explains the requirements of CEI. CEI Writing: We will continue to discuss the proper use of claims and evidence in writing using the information from “An Early Start on College” as our evidence. HW: 1.
