Today you are going to learn the elements of ARGUMENT so that you can find them in an article. You’ll know you understand argumentative writing when you write your essay about the value of a college education.

Discuss these questions:
What did you learn about the benefits of college/vocational/technical school/military service?
What CLAIMS did the interviewee make?
List 3-5 benefits of college/vocational/technical school/military service as mentioned by the person you interviewed.

You are going to read and highlight an argumentative essay, “Should We Ban Plastic Bags?” Each table is responsible for a component of the argumentative essay. First DEFINE your component on the sentence strip, then highlight your part:

Today, you will take notes on the elements of Rhetorical Appeal. In your notebook, brainstorm everything that you know about rhetorical appeal. Take NOTES on the graphic organizer that I provide. Staple or tape it into your journal.
