Just as each commercial made an effort to convince us to buy something or do something, literature employs persuasion in order to invoke certain emotions and reactions to the text. Persuasive writers use both facts and opinions to make their point. The main idea, however, must always be an opinion. Key Notes

Shows that the author or speaker is worth trusting. People you usually believe: Appeal #1: Ethos Shows that the author or speaker is worth trusting. Creditability aka trusting the “Expert”

The facts or evidence that supports the author’s or speaker’s point. Use logic: Appeal #2: Logos The facts or evidence that supports the author’s or speaker’s point. Give Good Reasons

Trying to make the audience feel strong emotions. People feel: Appeal #3: Pathos Trying to make the audience feel strong emotions. If the audience feels the same as you, they are more likely to agree with your argument.

The Best Kind of Persuader USE THEM ALL ETHOS to establish credibility LOGOS to give good reasons PATHOS to help the audience feel the same as you do
