Aim: Explain the Hundred Years’ War and Its Impact

The Hundred Years’ War 1300-England & France battled with each other on French soil for over a century Last Capetian (French) king died without a successor England’s Edward III, claimed right to the French throne War that Edward III launched, continued from 1337 to 1453 Became known as Hundred Years’ War 2

Change in Warfare in Europe Warriors still operating under medieval ideals of chivalry Warfare changed with the English introducing the longbow English longbowman let fly thousands of arrows at the French They unhorsed knights who then lay helplessly on the ground in their heavy armor Foot solders would then move in to slaughter the French English repeated their victories Success of the longbow spelled doom for chivalric warfare 3

Joan of Arc 1420, French and English signed a treaty Henry V would inherit French crown 1429, French peasant girl (Joan of Arc) claimed to have visions of God and hear angels Urged her to drive the English from France May 1429, Joan led French army into battle at Orleans England’s allies captures Joan in battle and handed her over to Church Condemned as heretic and burned at stake 4
