Sheila Taylor This is me And this is the block of apartments Where I live

Personal information My name is Sheila and I live in Plymouth UK which is in the southwest of England, I have 2 sons, 1 daughter and 6 grandchildren, I enjoy walking, swimming, and socialising with friends and family, My home overlooks the river Plym, these are the views from my windows

About Plymouth Plymouth is in the south west of England, has a population of around 250,000, and dates back to the bronze age, the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth for the new world in 1620, from the Mayflower steps on the Barbican. It is also a Naval port, and has a ferry connection between Plymouth and Spain.

Areas of interest in Plymouth The Dockyard is one of three operating bases in the UK For the Royal Navy, it is also the sole nuclear repair & refuelling facility. A contract was set up for the Dockyard to be built in There is a large dry dock area where ships are taken for repair and maintenance. Which was built in the 1970s.

THIS IS PLYMOUTH CITY CENTRE WHICH WAS TAKEN FROM THE TOP OF A BUS ON MY WAY HOME FROM TOWN

The Hoe & Barbican These are views of Plymouth Hoe, which is a large south facing open public space. Here is Sir Frances Drake, who I'm sure you know about from history books. Next is Smeatons Tower, which is the Top half of the Eddy stone lighthouse, originally built on the Eddy stone rocks and was dismantled & rebuilt on the hoe in 1877 when it was discovered that the rocks on which it stood were being washed away by large waves, causing the lighthouse to become unstable, and this is a view of the hoe from a boat out in Plymouth sound, and over here are views of the Barbican, with Yachts, the fish market, and the aquarium,

Plymouth University Plymouth University is the largest in the south west, with over 32,000 students, and almost 3,000 staff. It was originally a Polytechnic collage and gained its University status in 1992, in recent years the university has expanded having many new buildings added, plus lots of new student accommodation. Students from all over the world attend there.

THE ROYAL WILLIAM YARD The Royal William Yard was designed by Sir John Rennie, building was completed in 1835, for use by the Admiralty as a victualing depot for the Royal Navy, the yard became run down from 1970 onwards when the navys entitlement to a tot of rum ended. It was closed in 1992, and taken over by the Plymouth Development Corporation, in recent years the buildings have been transformed into private apartments, restaurants, shops, art galleries and a bakery, and there are plans for further developments.

Plymouth is separated from Cornwall by the river Tamar, and there are 2 bridges spanning it, one for cars, and one for trains The Royal Albert Bridge, (Brunel's bridge as most locals refer to it, as it was built by, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, ) was opened in 1859, by Prince Albert, and is the railway bridge. The Saltash bridge which is next to it, is for traffic, it was built in the late 50s, and is a toll bridge, users pay a small fee of £1.50 on the return journey from Cornwall. at first there were just 4 lanes, but in recent years a lane has been added on to each side, one for pedestrians, and one for cars.

Other places of access into Cornwall There are two other places with access to Cornwall from Plymouth, The Torpoint ferry which carries cars buses and other transport as well as passengers, and the Cremyl ferry which takes passengers to Mt, Edgecome, this ferry is solely for passengers, (oh! and cycles)

THINGS THAT I DO I VOLUNTEER AT A LOCAL PARK WITH MANY OTHERS, WE PLANT SEASONAL BULBS AND FLOWERS, TEND TO ALL THE BEDS AND WOODED AREAS, AND KEEP EVERYTHING WEED FREE, WE DO THIS ALL YEAR ROUND IN ALL WEATHERS, I ALSO VOLUNTEER AT ANOTHER PROJECT AT PENLEE, WHICH IS ALOTTMENTS FOR GROWING MOSTLY VEGETABLES, AND I HAVE AN ALOTTMENT VERY NEAR TO WHERE I LIVE WHERE I GROW MY OWN VEGETABLES.

Devonport Park These are views of Devonport Park, there are a lot of people who volunteer there, we plant seasonal flowers and bulbs, tend to all the beds shrubs and wooded areas, keeping them weed free throughout the year,

Penlee Horticulture Therapy Trust This is a project where people with mental health problems can come and plant flowers or vegetables, and interact with others, I attend as a volunteer and help out where I am needed.

East End Community Allotments These allotments are very near to where I live, I have a couple of raised beds there, and grow vegetables for myself, it is a great place for us to socialise also, which we very often do.

Plymouth and the South west is famous for its Pasties, Fish & chips, Cream Teas, Cider, & Fudge.
