Handouts Course Selection Sheet. Brochure (Course Options). Student Handbook (D.O.E.). Credit Summary Sheet (MUN entrance requirements on reverse).

Course Selection Process Follows ESD Policy on Student Achievement and Evaluation . Part of the course selection process involves meeting with students, Grade 9 teachers, and parents to explain course selections for the high school program.

Policy Governing Course Selection Registration into Academic Courses guided by: Students entering from Grade 9 must, at minimum, obtain a passing grade in the subject for which they plan to enroll. Students entering from Grade 9 must obtain a recommendation from their Grade 9 subject teacher for the high school course in which they wish to register. Registration into Advanced Courses are governed by the individual school. Example: Final grade of at least 80% in Science 9 recommended for entry to Science 1206 (sem).

Overview of Graduation Requirements "Credit" system in effect since Sept. 1983. New requirements effective Sept. 2005. 36 credits required for graduation (regular course load is 14 credits each year). 8 Language Arts credits (6 core & 2 optional Lang. Arts credits). 4 Math credits and 4 Science credits. 4 Social Studies credits (2 World & 2 Can. Studies credits). 2 credits in "Career Development." 2 credits in "Fine Arts." 2 credits in "Physical Education/Healthy Living." 4 "Other Required" credits. 6 credits from "Any Subject Area.“ At least 20 credits have to be beyond Level 1 courses, at least 9 credits have to be beyond Level 2 courses, no more then 4 local course credits

Overview of Graduation Requirements 7 different courses can satisfy more than one graduation requirement (see bottom of sheet) Students will need to decide which requirement each course will satisfy. One course cannot be used to satisfy 2 different graduation requirements (it's either/or).

Career Development 2201 Required for Graduation, but course not ready until Sept. 2006. 30 hour Community Service component required to be completed over 3 years of high school. At the earliest, students will be able to do this course while in Level 2.

Planning for Post-secondary Education Graduation from high school does not guarantee admission into Post-secondary programs. Students need to take the 'right' courses needed for admission (admission requirements vary and depend on the program). MUN requires an academic program. 3 year CONA programs usually require academic Math, however, non-academic English is accepted for ALL Programs.

Course Selection Sheet Front Side: General Information. Graduation Requirements Reverse Side: LH Column = Core courses. Grade 9 teachers to initial the course they recommend. RH Column = Electives. Alternate Choices – list 2 Final Check section.

Course Numbering 1st Digit represents course level. 2nd Digit represents credit value. 3rd Digit represents type of course (local, modified, FI, etc.) 4th Digit represents individual courses in subject area. Example – Math 1206 = Level 1, 2 Credit, Prescribed Course, Practical.

Course Selection Sheet Each course on "Course Selection Sheet" is matched with the category it satisfies. Art 1201 (Section F) counts as "Fine Arts" 2 credit course (2nd digit). General description of each course is outlined in the "Level 1 Course Offerings" pamphlet.

Section A - Language Arts (Core) English 1202: Non-academic stream. To graduate, students will need 2 "Optional Language Arts" credits (Section E). Along with English 1202, students should consider taking English 1200 if recommended by teacher (Section E - "Optional Language Arts").
