1 Sackville High School Course Selection 2015-2016

2 Why is course selection important?  What you choose now will effect future course/program selections  You need to be aware of prerequisites of future courses and program requirements  Research admission requirements of post- secondary institutions you may want to attend

3 Graduation Requirements  18 credits required  Maximum 7 credits from grade 10 level  Minimum 5 credits from grade 12 level  3 English 10, 11, 12  2 Math 10, 11  2 Science Sci 10, a Sci 11 course  1 Can His Studies (Mik 10, ACS 11, Can His 11)  1 Global Studies 12  1 Phys Ed  1 Fine Arts  2 Science, Math or Tech  5 Electives

4 New Course in 2015-2016 Textile Technology 12 (Open) Fulfills one Tech credit Fulfills one Tech credit  Prerequisite: none  Textile Technology 12 combines theory with a hands-on approach to textiles, fashion and fibre arts. It is an exciting course for those interested in art, craft, and fashion; as well as technology and materials science. The curriculum is designed to encourage students to develop advanced skill sets related to textile arts and technologies. Students will develop a portfolio of work and a final textile project to demonstrate their learning. For more details see the Guidance site or Course handbook.

5 Math Course Choices (2015-16)   Students require two Math Credits to graduate   Check post secondary program requirements   Talk to your Math teacher   Click here to refer to Department of Education’s guide to selecting Math courses Department of Education’s guide to selecting Math courses Degrees is Science, Engineering, Computer Science all require Pre Cal 12 with usually a mark of 70% Degrees in Commerce/Business, Nursing, Kinesiology all require at least a Math 12 academic with usually a mark of at least a 70% (some programs are very competitive) If you need Pre Cal 12 you will have to register for Math 11 and Pre Cal 11 in your grade 11 year If you need a Math 12 academic credit for your program of choice you must have completed the minimal prerequisite Math 10 academic (if you are going to 12 in 2014)   If you are grade 10 this year you must select a grade 11 Math course for 2014

6 French Immersion  Minimum of 9 credits in French Immersion to graduate (we only offer 10 so you can only opt out of 1)  At least 2 FI credits a year  Francais 10, 11, and 12 are compulsory  Grade 10: FRA10 F, SCI10F, Art Dramatique 10F Art Dramatique 10F  Grade 11: FRA11F, HDC11F, BIO11F, Mode de Vie Actif 11F  Grade 12: FRA12F, or HPG12F, BIO12F,

7 CO Op 11 and 12  Students interested in taking Cooperative Education 11 or 12 are to sign up for the course on powerschool as a subject not as an alternate. The courses are listed as COOPAC11 or COOPAC12 Applications and interviews for CO OP will take place after course selection with Ms Buffet in Student Services

8 O2 students Ms McCarthy the O2 teacher will assist O2 students with course selection O2 students can do the paperwork but not input courses into Powerschool yet

9 Skilled Trades  Only students in the Skilled Trades program can choose skilled trades courses on powerschool during course selection  Skilled trades courses are: Construction Trades 11 (CTR11) Construction Trades 11 (CTR11) Transportation Trades 11 (TTR11) Transportation Trades 11 (TTR11) Skilled Trades COOP 12 (ST1 COOP 12) (Formally Home Trades HTT 12) Skilled Trades COOP 12 (ST1 COOP 12) (Formally Home Trades HTT 12)

10 Course Load  Grade 11s take a minimum of 7 courses (required to take 8 if unsuccessful in one or more courses in grade 10 year) (required to take 8 if unsuccessful in one or more courses in grade 10 year)  Grade 12s take a minimum of 6 courses (may be required to take an additional course for every unsuccessful course in grade 11, up to a total of 8 courses.)  Students may take 8 courses all three years  May not be able to repeat failed courses in 2 nd sem so plan ahead

11 1. The admission requirement for certificate and diploma programs is usually a high school completion diploma. 2. Individual programs may have other admission criteria, such as specific high school subjects, or the submission of an entrance portfolio. 3. 12 (Other Universities may have different requirements) For general admission to programs, students require grade 12 level academic English (English 12) generally with a mark of at least a 70% and four additional academic courses Dalhousie University admission requirements Mount Saint Vincent University admission requirements Saint Mary’s University admission requirements Check the program admission requirements at the specific university of interest

13 Virtual Course Selection You have just completed Step 1 Teachers will give you worksheets and a course selection booklet On your own time go to the front page of the virtual guidance site and go through the linked steps for virtual course selection Your powerschool link is now open for course selection input Guidance appointments are available but you must have attempted to complete steps 1-4 before booking an appointment
