Iron Curtain

What was the Iron Curtain? The Iron Curtain was the symbolic boundary dividing Europe into two separate parts. This boundary started from the end of World War II in 1945 and lasted until the end of The Cold War in 1991. The term “The Iron Curtain” was first used by Nazi Germany's Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels.

People in Eastern Europe didn't like the Iron Curtain because it ignored other important things that were going on. On the East side of the Iron Curtain were the countries that were connected to the Soviet Union. The other side of the Iron Curtain, states developed their own economic and military alliances.

West Side Vs East Side Since the wall divided the west from the east, many families were separated and had no way of reaching their loved ones. The west side was the free side. The east side however, was not. They were controlled by the Soviet Union. People often tried to escape and go to the west side. If they got caught they died.

Winston Churchill Speech Winston Churchill was a British prime minister during the time of WW Two. Churchill gave a speech regarding The Iron Curtain. Churchill’s point was to address how he felt about the wall, separating families and friends. No information went passed these walls. This was a problem to Churchill. Churchill stated that he was moved from the land he won and refused to leave the land.

Radio Free Europe Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty were helpful ways of getting information of Western Policy during the Cold War.
