3 The Cold War The Cold War was a ‘war’ involving the USA and the USSR in which no direct fighting actually occurred between the two countries, but tensions were very high. The USA and the USSR in 1945 were two very different countries with very different beliefs: The USA was capitalist The USSR was communist

4 The grave differences between the two countries existed before WWII even ended, and as the war closed it seemed they were the only two that had the capability to fight for world power. The Cold War officially started at the end of WWII in 1947 and ended with the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991. – Spanning 9 presidents (FDR included)

5 Causes of the Cold War 1.Differences in Ideologies Economic differences set countries apart from the beginning Each country is afraid being taken over by the other 2.Aims of both sides after WWII America looked to protect peace and Russia sought land Potsdam and Yalta Conferences

6 Causes of the Cold War 3. Resentment about history: Russia had sided with Hitler America had tried to stop Russian Revolution 4. Events after WWII led to conflict between countries : Bombing of Hiroshima- Americans keep the atomic bomb secret Winston Churchill's speech of warning- “Iron Curtain”.

7 Yalta And Potsdam Conferences Allied leaders argued over what to do with the countries of Eastern Europe (which Germany had invaded) Soviet Union wanted FRIENDLY COMMUNIST governments USA and G.B. feared the Soviets planned to create Pro-Soviet communist governments

13 Berlin Wall Berlin is Germany’s capital city. The Soviets built the wall to keep East Berliners from escaping to the Western sectors.
