7 IRON CURTAIN The invasion of the Soviet Union by Germany in 1941 created fears of future attacks. With troops already in Eastern countries at the end of the war, Stalin dominated Europe, giving the Soviets a buffer from the West. An IRON CURTAIN over Eastern Europe.

9 Berlin Air Lift At the end of World War II Germany was divided into four zones (U.S., Great Britain, Soviet Union and France)

11 Berlin Air Lift In 1948 the Western Allies wanted to merge their zones into one The Soviets did not want join so he closed off the West from Berlin. The West responded by air lifting supplies to Berlin. Stalin gave up and Germany was now divided into East Germany and West Germany.

12 Arms Race The Soviet Union had set off its first atomic bomb in 1949. The United States and the Soviet Union had become involved in a growing arms race, in which both countries built up their armies and increased the sizes of their weapons arsenals (Stockpiling).

13 Truman Plan and Containment
The West feared that Stalin was another Hitler and wanted to conquer the world. President Truman began giving help to people resisting communism . This was known as the Truman Plan. Policy of Containment- Leave communist countries alone but stop it from spreading to other countries.
