5 #3 Cuban Missile Crisis After the communist Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, the US tried to overthrow him. He got Missiles from the Soviet Union to protect himself. This was a threat to the U.S. U.S. blockaded Cuba until Soviets removed missiles.

6 # U.S. citizens prepared by building bomb shelters
Prepared bomb shelters and had missile drills.

It was a massive effort supported by the United States to rebuild Western Europe after WWII

10 #7 Domino Theory A theory that suggested that if one nation fell to communism the neighboring nations would fall to communism. US concerned because it was afraid communism would take over the world.

NATO=This was an alliance of U.S. and Western European countries. (mainly democracies)

12 Warsaw Pact An alliance of Eastern European communist countries. (Headed by Soviet Union) NATO - Democratic- Warsaw Pact - Communist.

United States & Soviet Union. Superpower is a country with massive military and economic power. It is able to project power globally.

14 #10 Containment A policy developed by U.S. President Truman after WWII to contain Communism.

15 Korea and Vietnam Similarities-both wars were fought in East Asia to contain communism. Korea Vietnam- Late 1950’s to 1975

16 Korea & Vietnam Korea ended in a tie. Korea is still divided at the 38th parallel. North-communist and the South is Democratic. Vietnam War is considered a loss for the U.S. since Vietnam remains communist to this day.

17 Arms Race A massive competition of military build up... mostly nuclear weapons... where the U.S. and the Soviet Union tried to build bigger nuclear bombs and militaries than the other.

18 #13-Berlin Wall The Soviets built a wall that divided Communist East Berlin and Democratic West Berlin. Life in the West was prosperous and good. Life in the East was miserable under communist rule.

19 Berlin Wall The Berlin wall came down in 1989 when Germans from the East crossed over to West Berlin. It marked the ending of the Cold War and the collapse of Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. Germany unified shortly after.

20 Collapse of Soviet Union
Officially the Soviet Union collapsed on December 25, 1991. For Germans, when the people of East Berlin tore down the wall in communism was all but over for them.

21 Truman Doctrine The Truman Doctrine was the official policy of President Truman. He said he would use any and all means including military force to stop communism.

22 Berlin Airlift When the Soviets built the Berlin Wall and cut off West Berlin, the U.S. dropped food and supplies from planes to save the German people in the of West Berlin

23 What did British Prime minister Winston Churchill mean when he said“…(A)n Iron Curtain” had fallen over Eastern Europe He was referring to the Soviets brutal rule over Eastern Europe… since they made it communist.
