We use a/ an with singular countable nouns Note: Use a in front of a word that starts with a consonant sound, and Use an in front of a word that starts with vowels (a, e, i, o, u) Examples: a doctor, a big house, a boy an apple, an egg, an easy exam

The indefinite article, a/ an, is only used before singular count nouns that have not been specified. a/ an means one. Examples: I am writing a letter. She is eating an apple. a/ an is not used before general plural nouns. Examples: There are pictures on the wall.
