Independent & dependent clauses Main vs. Subordinate

The Clause: Clauses ALWAYS have subjects and verbs Clauses are categorized into 2 groups: Independent (AKA main) Dependent (AKA subordinate)  Refer to“50 Subordinating Conjunction” Handout The independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence or thought (not a fragment) The dependent clause CANNOT stand alone; it has a subject and verb, but is a fragment and DEPENDS on a main clause to make sense

Subject, Object of Preposition, & Direct Object Noun functions Subject, Object of Preposition, & Direct Object

Noun: as a subject Nekele scored a 100 on the test.  The subject of a sentence will be a noun or pronoun The subject is the focal point of the sentence, and it is what performs the action of the verb. Nekele scored a 100 on the test. Before leaving, Lee asked the teacher a question.

Noun: as an object of preposition The noun that comes after the preposition is called the object of the preposition. Our school is around the corner. Marcus hid under the bed. Please give the paper to Marissa.

Noun: as direct objects The direct object is the noun that receives the action of the transitive verb. Typically, a direct object follows the verb and can be found by asking who or what received the action of the verb. Joe ate a calzone at Fellini’s Pizza. After dinner, my mom always serves cake.

Helping, Linking, & Action Verbs Verb functions Helping, Linking, & Action Verbs

Helping, linking, action ***Refer to yellow sheet from our warm-ups Helping Verb: helps out the main verb in a sentence. They accomplish this by giving more detail to how time is portrayed in a sentence. Terry is writing an email to a client. Researches are finding the clues to the mystery package. Linking Verb: connects a subject to its predicate without expressing an action I am the best player on the team. My dog smells awful! Action Verb: expresses physical or mental action; tells us what the subject is doing- physically or mentally She wants a horse for her birthday. The chicken strutted across the road.
