Different types of phrases ** REMEMBER** a phrase is a group of words that is used as a single part of speech and does not contain a subject and a verb
Prepositional Phrases Definition: usually tell: when where the action takes place We will meet at 4p.m. The car is in the garage

If a group of words has a subject and a verb, the group of words is NOT a phrase We bought a used car (subject – we, verb - bought) After she had left (subject – she, verb- had left)
Clauses A clause is a group of words that contains a verb and its subject, and is used as part of a sentence There are 2 types: Independent Dependent
Independent Clauses a.k.a sentences A independent clause (or main clause) express a complete thought and can stand by itself. For example: Ms. Torres cut pieces of stained glass with a diamond wheel, and her partner put the pieces together with wax and lead
Dependent Clauses a.k.a. subordinate clauses A dependent or subordinate clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone. before the bell rings s. v. because he is proud s. v. after it stopped raining s. v.
CAVEAT Like a phrase, a clause is a word group used as part of a sentence. The difference is that a clause contains a verb and its subject, while the phrase does not
