PE Syllabus 2018-19

Course Description Students will learn how their bodies move, how to perform a variety of physical activities, the health- related benefits of regular physical activity, and specific skills that will allow them to adopt a physically active, healthy life-style. This course also provides learning experiences that meet the developmental needs of students. With physical education, students become confident, independent, self-controlled and resilient; develop positive social skills; learn to set and strive for personal, achievable goals; learn to assume leadership, co-operate with others, and accept responsibility for their own behavior; and improve their academic performance.

Physical Education Standards STANDARD 1: Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. STANDARD 2: Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. STANDARD 3: Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance. STANDARD 4: Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance. STANDARD 5: Students demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

Class Expectations Students must be appropriately dressed in PE attire. Students must actively participate and give best effort. Students must use appropriate social skills and work cooperatively with others. Students must have good teamwork and sportsmanship. Students must be active listeners and follow directions. Students must abide by school, class, and locker room rules. Students must make-up any missed work such as written assignments/tests, timed runs, motor skills, performance tasks.

Physical Education Attire The physical education attire is a pair of navy blue shorts and a gray shirt or sweatshirt that may be purchased at school. Supportive athletic shoes and socks must be worn to ensure students’ safety. The physical education attire must conform to the school dress code policy. For students’ safety, no jewelry is allowed! The school staff is not responsible for lost/stolen items.

Medical Excuses Students are required to bring a written note from a parent/guardian in order to be excused from physical education. Students are still expected to dress out and participate to the maximum degree that their illness/medical condition allows. A doctor’s note must be presented for illness or injury lasting more than 3 days. Please obtain the District approved Physical Education Modifications for Injury or Illness form PRIOR to your doctor’s visit. The form is available on my teacher webpage, our PE website and from our School Health Office.

PE Make-Ups Students are required to make up all assessments missed due to absence, non-participation/non-suit, and medical excuse. Sixth grade students can make- up 2 non-suits per semester and seventh grade students can make-up 1 non-suit per semester. PE make-ups for timed runs and non-suits will be on Tuesdays afterschool at 2:30 p.m. All assessments and make-up dates will be posted on my teacher webpage.

Scholarship Grades Participation & Social Skills (45%): Actively participate and give best effort in warm-up, stretching, agilities, activities, drills, and games. Use appropriate social skills and work cooperatively with others by resolving conflicts positively. Have a positive attitude and social interaction with others by showing integrity and respect. Display good teamwork and sportsmanship by encouraging others and showing empathy.

Scholarship Grades Continued… Written Assessments (20%) Demonstrate knowledge and mastery on assignments, quizzes/tests, reports, and projects. Motor Skill Assessments (15%) Performance and improvement on motor skill rubrics, tests, and performance tasks. Fitness Assessments (15%) Performance, improvement, and goal-setting on cardiovascular timed runs and FITNESSGRAM.  Homework (5%) Prepared for class dressed in appropriate PE attire and any other assigned homework.

POWERSCHOOL Parents and students can view PE grades on PowerSchool. To sign-up, go to Marshall Middle School home page and click on PowerSchool Parent Portal to create an account.  

Citizenship Citizenship grades include, but are not limited to behavior, participation, attitude, sportsmanship, effort and personal interactions. Students will begin each semester with a citizenship grade of an “S” (Satisfactory). From there, it will be determined what level they are either contributing to or hindering the progress of the learning environment. Please refer to the Physical Education Citizenship rubric for more information.

FITNESSGRAM Establishing lifelong habits of regular physical activity are the primary goal of the FITNESSGRAM. Sixth grade students will prepare for the state-mandated FITNESSGRAM conducted in grades 7 and 9. They will be pre- tested in the fall to establish baseline fitness levels and set personal goals. The FITNESSGRAM tests 6 main fitness areas that represent 5 components of fitness: Aerobic Capacity, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition.

Homework/Assignments If you want to receive homework notifications for PE, you need to subscribe to your PE class, which is accessible through my teacher webpage. Go to the Marshall Middle School website, find my webpage, click on your PE period and click +Subscribe. You will then enter your email address and select the type of subscriber you are (STUDENT) and click Subscribe. EXTRA CREDIT IN HOMEWORK IF YOU SUBSCRIBE!
