Bernotas P.E. uniforms consist of blue shorts and a blue t-shirt. Uniforms are available for purchase at any time during the school year. Shirts cost $9 and shorts are $8. Students must wear athletic shoes and have them properly tied. Students are allowed and encouraged to wear sweatpants and/or a sweatshirt under their P.E. uniform when the weather gets colder and class is being held outside. Rental P.E. uniforms and gym shoes are available in case students forget their P.E. uniform. Rentals may be checked out from the P.E. staff at no charge to the student. DRESSING FOR P.E.

3 INJURIES or ILLNESSES Students with a parent request for limited or restricted activity due to injury or illness will be provided with a modified program. Parent notes are good for up to three days; extended excuses need to be issued from a doctor. If a student is out of P.E., they are also prohibited from participating in an after school sport for the designated period of time. Students are expected to dress down and participate in the physical activity or modified activity unless notified otherwise.

4 Our goal is to provide a quality physical education program, introducing students to a variety of activities throughout the year that will encourage enjoyment of physical activity. We strive to provide students with the skills, knowledge and confidence that will enable them to become a lifelong physically active person. We want the students to understand the importance of physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the lifetime benefits of health and wellness. We hope to keep students active, engaged and feeling successful while emphasizing kindness, cooperation and respect for one another. THIS IS OUR MISSION...

5 ENHANCED P.E. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, enhanced physical education correlates directly to the health and well-being of students for the rest of their lives and has cognitive benefits, too, making students more receptive to learning. There is a significant body of research showing that children who are more physically active perform better in class and on standardized tests. Improving opportunities for physical activity is an imperative for improving our children’s academic achievement and their health. For more information regarding the new enhanced physical education please refer to the following link: A task force of D47 Middle School P.E. teachers was assembled at the beginning of June to work on creating and aligning the Middle School P.E. curriculum to the new Enhanced P.E. state standards. The team met for 3 days in June and again for 2 days in August. This was the mission statement the task force came up with for the district. Some of you may have seen this in the District Newsletter that was sent out over the summer. At the bottom of this slide, there is a link to the ISBE report on Enhance P.E. If you would like to find out more about what Enhanced P.E. is, this is a great place to start.

6 ENHANCED P.E. AT BERNOTAS
Enhanced P.E. is defined as “programs that increase the length of, or activity levels in, school-based physical education classes.” Specifically, an Enhanced P.E. program should increase the amount of time students spend in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during P.E. class. 1-2 days a week will be designated “Fitness Days” Students will be working on their Cardiovascular Fitness, Muscular Strength and Endurance, and Flexibility. Class discussions on the benefits of Fitness, FITT principles, Goal setting, etc. So what does Enhanced P.E. at Bernotas look like? Enhanced P.E. is defined as programs/units that increase the amount of time students spend in moderate to vigorous physical activity. This year Bernotas students will be spending more time engaged in physical activity in a variety of ways. We will be implementing 1-2 days a week of strictly fitness based activities (with the focus being cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility). On these days the students will not only be engaged in physical activity they will also be learning about the benefits of fitness, the FITT principles, how to find out their target heart rate zone, etc).
