4  Higher academic achievement is associated with higher levels of fitness in grade 9.  Students in grade 9 who meet minimum fitness levels in three or more physical fitness areas show the greatest gains in academic achievement.  The relationship between academic achievement and fitness in grade 9 was greater in mathematics than in reading, particularly at high fitness levels. 18 Section 27-7 of Senate bill 211 redefined what is to be included in Physical Education curriculum: A physical education course of study shall include a developmentally planned and sequential curriculum that fosters the development of movement skills, enhances health-related fitness, increases students’ knowledge, offers direct opportunities to learn how to work cooperatively in a group setting, and encourages healthy habits and attitudes for a a healthy lifestyle. A physical education course of study shall provide students with an opportunity for an appropriate amount of daily physical activity and must be a part of the regular school curriculum and not extra- curricular in nature or organization.

20 BE A ROLE MODEL TO YOUR CHILD *30-60 minutes daily moderate physical activity ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO EXERCISE DAILY AND TO FIND ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE PHYSICAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS CONTACT YOUR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS /STATE SENATORS / REPRESENTATIVES Eliminate waivers, keep physical education requirements…let’s take care of our future….now! PARTNER WITH OUR PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM Financially assist, provide materials for teambuilding, be a guest speaker, donate fitness equipment….the possibilities are endless!
