The French Where – claiming interior lands of North America - from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rocky Mountains

The French WHY They were trapping furs and trading with Native American people The French built forts and trading posts but were not colonizing Building good relationships with many Native American Tribes

The British Where – settling along the Atlantic coastline and around the Hudson Bay

The British Why – the British claimed land in America for many reasons They were expanding their empire and Colonizing Religious Freedom Expand Trade, Expand business, Lumber, Expand farming, and fishing

The British With more colonization and expansion – the relation with some Native American tribes became quite tense – BUT with others they formed a strong alliance

Spain WHERE Spain claimed many lands in the South South America, the Caribbean, and in the southern parts of North America

Spain Why – Spain was expanding their empire Searching for wealth, gold, and riches. Slavery also becomes part of their wealth

PROBLEMS in North America France and Great Britain have been rivals for many years over land and wealth Many wars fought between the two - Now they are neighbors in the New World

The French and Indian War Begins Wars in Europe have created much tension that now extends to North America Why did it start here? The Ohio River Valley was being claimed by both countries

The French and Indian War Great Britain begins moving further west (valuable fur trade) France feels they are trespassing – begin building forts Both sides begin forming allies – friendships – with various Native American tribes The Iroquois (5 Nations) prove to be a very important ally with Great Britain (Mohawks, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga, Onandaga)

Brief Summary of the War France also convinced Spain to be its ally Forced Great Britain to fight the war on multiple fronts War also fought in Europe – 7 Years War Great Britain sent many Redcoats – British soldiers to America BUT also recruited many colonists to join the fight

Brief Summary of the War A young 22 year old Virginian would become a British hero during war – George Washington After 9 long years, the war would come to an end British are Victorious The end of the French and Indian War brings many changes and problems to the Americas

IMPORTANCE Major cause to the American Revolution

A Treaty is Signed – War is Over The Treaty of Paris 1763 3 Main Terms of the Treaty France gives up Canada and most lands east of the Mississippi River to Britain Spain acquires French lands west of the Mississippi River (Louisiana Territory) as well as the port of New Orleans Britain acquires Florida from Spain

All of French claims in North America are lost – BUT – they will be back!
