GREED - countries wanted to capture the most land in the New World and control the treasures of the territory FEAR - countries feared that one country would gain more power than others

5 Tension Builds War Erupts
Ohio River Valley was being disputed. Virginia wanted this region for expansion Trade Disputes - British were trading with Native Americans who previously had only traded with the French Washington was attacked at Ft. Necessity

6 GEORGE WASHINGTON 22-year-old land surveyor and captain
1753 – Was sent to tell French to stay out of the Ohio River Valley and to stop building forts there Demands were ignored 1754 – Washington returns this time with 150 Virginia militia troops to build Ft. Necessity

7 GEORGE WASHINGTON, cont.
He attacks French in a nearby camp killing 10 and forcing the rest to surrender Ft. Necessity was later attacked by the French and Washington surrendered Washington later made commander of small Virginia force that had to protect a 300-mile front

8 Georgia’s New Boundaries after 1763
Western border – now the Mississippi River (Treaty of Paris) Southern border – now the St. Mary’s River (Proclamation of 1763)

9 Proclamation of 1763 Moved Georgia’s boundary south to the St. Mary’s river Forbade the colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains Cherokee and Creek gave up all lands between the Ogeechee and Savannah River They also gave up land south of the Altamaha River

10 Georgia’s Role in the War
Georgia did not take part in the French and Indian War but benefited from it 1. When land came under control settlers began to migrate to the new colony 2. New boundaries provided water access for future shipping 3. Provided good farmland and dense forests with timber

11 Results of the French and Indian War
The British gained control of Canada, which today continues to be a friend and trading partner with the U.S. The western frontier – the Ohio River Valley and all lands east of the Mississippi River – was opened to Virginia and other colonies Great Britain obtained Florida from Spain, which had been an ally to the French during the war For its help, France gave the Louisiana Territory to Spain After 150 years of colonization, France lost all of its land in the area War led to the American Revolution as Great Britain found itself left with a huge war debt
